2001 Saturn SC1 5 speed manual transmission. The linkage has broken, stuck in reverse, shifter loose in the console. Are there any easy fixes, or do I need to blow my budget? shifter loose in console , at least it is stuck in 1 st gear, are there any on line manuals available or good picture resource's available?
Check the cable clips at the trans. Sometimes these clips come out and won't shift. Horseshoe clips that hold the cable housing.
02 saturn shifter lost all tension won't go in to any gears. The shift is loose and moves around.
Lilzippy has the fix when you don't want to replace the cables. One of the technicians I know had his cables fail on his Saturn and bought a kit off of Ebay. It wasn't much of a kit , but worked. He also had to put a new clutch in a little later though. The only reason these cables fail so early is because of all the wear on the clutch pressure plate and clutch disc. Simply replacing the cables will only bandaid the problem of the worn out clutch components. I ended up purchasing my old 1996 Saturn when my customer didn't want to replace the clutch and the cables. They opted for just the cables, and three weeks later had the car towed back in to trade it for a newer car once the clutch gave out completely. I saw this several times while working at Saturn of Memphis and Saturn of Germantown.

An easy fix would be to go tothe Junk Yard and pull off the parts you need .......in order to do this though I would advise getting a Haynes Manual (VERY VERY HELPFUL BOOK) for your car...Available at your local Auto parts Store (even if you dont do it yourself you should still get the book...it can save you a lot of time and money when it comes to knowing and working on your vehicle)

The bushings on ebay work from what I understand, but a bit pricey. The bushing in question is a P.O.S. for sure. Easy fix though if you have tools and time. First I drilled out the ball that the end of the linkage, the one your faithfull broken bushing use to ride on. popped a 3/8 inch bolt thru the drilled hole, put a piece of 3/8 inch heater hose "cut to length desired" over the bolt ( this is what the linkage ring rides on ) put a rubber gromet or rubber washer that has a hole big enough to fit over the heater hose on each side of the linkage ring ( oh and dont forget the lube - regular grease will eat rubber so use good judgement). put a washer big enough to keep your gromet or rubber washer from falling off, and then a lock nut, and I cannot stress the fact that it has to be a lock nut. DO NOT tighten the living **** out of everything, that little linkage ring is plastic after all just tighten it "lightly snugish" and just make sure your lock nut can't be un-tightened by hand. I hope all of this makes sense, anyway total repair cost- one hour of my time, about $4 of parts at the local auto parts store. best of all, it should outlast the car. Oh fyi, I used rubber parts because that is less likely to break the plastic linkage ring. Showed what I did to a mechanic in town, said now he actually knows what to do next time one of those f-ing saturns comes in with busted linkage. Good luck fellow "manual" saturn owners!

I have the same problem. It sounds almost exactly the same. What has probably happened is the little "clip" that holds your shifter itself to the linkage in your console has fallen off/broke. Mine just did this. I tore apart my console and if I hold the little clip on the ball on the shifter, I can shift through gears. Not something to do at highway speeds for sure, but that is where the problem is at. Going to tear it apart further tonight to see if I can't find a way to make this work.......
mine stuck in reverse dont know if its antitow lock.
called breakdown reversed it to tow then gears worked, can any one explain this c180 classic 1995
I live in California and I was wondering how much to repair my 1997 saturn sl2 linkage. It broke today coming home from work. It's stuck in 2nd gear.
I was sitting in a tim horton's drive thru when my shifter lost all tension. I had to drive back to work in first gear with my shifter skirt pulled up so I could hold it in first. The part came off, and its a cheap piece of plastic. Princess Auto should carry the part needed to fix it up, but as we all know the console can be a pain in the arse to take apart. Its a cheap part and takes about two hours from start to finish to repair.
not going in reverse
