How do I remove the hold down on the battery so I can replace a dead battery?
There is one bolt at the base of the battery that holds a wedge that retains the battery to the battery tray, remove it.

SOURCE: 2008 Ford Escape can't remove rear signal light housing
there is a clip holding the back, it is a push in clip, the screws hold the light assembly in position, so does the clip, so when you remove the screws you will still have to pull the light out of the clip, you should be able to pull it out with out damaging the clip and reinstall it with out damage as well. hope this helps, let me know
SOURCE: Battery Charge
The best way is to get a voltmeter and check the voltage of the battery with the truck running and not running. When the truck is running, the voltage across the battery terminals should be aboput 14.9 volts (showing the alternator is charging the battery). With the truck off, the battery voltage should be about 12 volts (showing that the battery is holding the charge). From there, you should be able to tell which is bad.

After eight years, if the battery hasn't been replaced already, then it may be just that. Otherwise the only thing left to check is the battery cables themselves. Corrosion at the battery terminals is obvious but the alternator lead connection to the battery terminal might need to be verified electricaly. Also check the negative battery cable at the block and chassis. Basic charging system test is: Voltage at the positive terminal with ignition and all accessories off should be at least 12.6 volts. If below 12.6 even after 2 hour charge, replace the battery. With engine running at 1500 rpm, between 14.1.and 14.7 volts. With the accessories turned on one at a time, the charging voltage should drop and then come back up and not drop below 14.1 volts. If it does, the regulator is deffective. The voltage should change in response to loads and engine speed. Good luck, Techjoel

Is it hex (like an allen screw) or is it a Torx or Torx plus? Torx are serrated.
SOURCE: HOW TO INSTALL AHITCH ON A 2008 FORD ESCAPE
I have a 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid. The best hitch is the one available at your Ford dealer parts department. You cannot install a generic hitch because this is a unitized body/frame car. The Ford hitch bolts right onto existing bolts. It took me only about 2 hours to do the job. You have to cut a small square hole in the plastic bumper for the hitch to stick out.
