BMW Z3 3.0 year 2000 erratic tickover problems

Have BMW Z3 3.0i roadster built in June 2000. Cars runs well but occasionally has erratic tick over i.e. when coming to a stop engine ticks over normally and then increases to about 1000 revs for an instant then goes back to normal then reapeats this again then settles back to normal and is ok. Car does this only occasionally about twice a month. Apart from this car is normal and the problem is more of a nuisance than a problem. Somtimes going into reverse appears to make this problem happen. Have had oxygen sensors checked by garage. Mike

You can in most cases repair this by cleaning the engine throttle valve and the idle speed control valve using a product called CRC Spray Throttle valve cleaner. Spray the cleaner into the air intake of the engine with the hose removed from the throttle body, the engine will try to stall so hold up the idle speed manually. Once you have used up about 1/2 can of the cleaner stall the engine out while spraying and turn the key off, disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and then reconnect and drive the car for a about 25 miles of varied driving modes. If this doesn't cure the problem you may need the fuel injectors professionally cleaned by the dealer service dept.

I have a 2004 BMW 325I that keeps stalling and also today the transmission light came on?

oh dear, this sounds like bad news,,, it could be the torque converter starting to sezies up on you but at the bmw has whats called a "stepper motor" to ajust its throtol settings there is little you can do to up the tickover speed a bit,,, it should be ticking over at 750--850rpm in gear when hot,, if its not then its ticking over far to slowly and it will keep stalling on you when you try to pull away or are sat at the lights wateing? putting it on a computer is the only way to ajust the tickover
