2004 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 engine, and oil light keeps coming on.

The engine light continues to come on when I slow down, or at a stop. I have taken to 2 different shops and they say it has to do with the 2.7 engine, and the problem is unfixable. How can this problem be resolved?

I have the same exact problem. My engine oil light keeps going on and off. Not to mention the horrible ticking sounds coming from the engine. I called every shop and took my car in and they have all told me that it will cost a lot of money. Some of them even told me the only solution is to get a new engine. Mine is an 02 dodge intrepid and i hate it. It has given me problems since day one.

I have this very same problem with my 2004 intrepid. It started right after the dodge dealership in my hometown changed the oil. It has only 60,000 miles on it.

You may not need a new engine! The clicking sound comes from the oil pump not getting enough oil. Check you oil levele constantly and change your oil using a synthetic oil or an oil stabelizer such as Lucas oil stabelizer. After a while the sound should go away and the light should stay off. Is your car leaking oil? Or is there a blue smoke that comes from the tail pipe?

Funny, I have a 98 with 2.7 and it doesn't do that. Only at Stops this happens? Once you take off & get to speed what happens?

Did you fix the problem? if so what did you do?

  • kipp godsey Sep 16, 2013

ok to start with every engine is the same some need more attention.but the 2.7 engine is a very good engine....back to the problem : ok you ticking is the valves on the top of the engine here is the fix go under the car and drop the oil pan and locate the oil sending unit take it off and see if it works if so clean and put back in and put oil back in and it will fix the lifters and your light will stay off unless it is a bad sending unit if still on change it out any one can do this they just have to want to do it and it will fix the problem

Major issues with the 2.7L motor. design flaw causes oil to hang in the heads and "cook" creating sludge. Sludge builds until the passage to the timing chain is blocked starving the chain and causing near instant failure...this is a "rattling" or Roulette wheel sound. The 2.7L is an "interference" type engine. When the chain breaks or jumps, the cams stop in position thus leaving the valves wherever they may land. The pistons keep on moving though....and kiss whatever valves happen to be open. Bye Bye Motor. Using Synthetic oil EARLY and exclusively cures the sludge issue. Replacing the timing chain and components at interval is crucial...don't wait for it to break or jump!

I had the same problem. The answer is the OIL PRESURE SWITCH. It's leaking slowly from the switch but when the car comes to a stop or idle it starts to leak. The switch cost me about $28 CND from the dealer. It is a commen problem in the Intrepids and Caravan. Also the noise is because you either have little to no oil do to the leak and/or low power stering fluid. Hope this helps you out.

I have a 99 and 01 intrepid with the 2.7 engine i heard of the sludge/timing chain problems so i use 5w30 synthetic oil and an engine flush once a year, 200,000k on both with no problems. i tried 0w30 for winter driving and had the oil light come on at idle,to thin of oil i guess.

You may have to replace the engine to solve this. I had the same problem on my 2003 Intrepid with the 2.7 at about 47770 miles. The oil light came on and the dealer told me I needed a new engine. They replaced it with a $100 deductible.

Oil light flickers when slowing down or stopping

check to make sure the oil level is correct. if this is good and there is no engine noise then it could be the oil pressure switch has gone bad and needs replacing. if you have an engine noise then get the oil pressure check as you could have a bad oil pump or engine components worn out like bearings.

It ticks after warming up but only when i come to a stop an oil light comes on 99 2.7L intrepid

Have that checked ASAP, you may already have engine damage. These engines are bad news, Oil sludging, timing chain and water pump problems if you dont use a synthetic oil.

2004 dodge stratus oil light started coming on when I slowed down or cam to a stop and then would turn off when I started driving again. Now it stays on al the time

You need to have that chk'd out. Even low oil pressure can damage the engine let alone no oil pressure. Ck your oil level. It is a serious issue to have that light on. Good Luck, _Ned_

My 04 dodge stratus oil light comes on when i slow down or come to a stop, but turns off as i go

Sounds like your oil level is too low.
When you slow down or stop, your oil levels out and is too low for the gauge to read.
When you speed up, your oil sloshes and splashes the sensor, thus making it appear that it is circulating properly, when it actually isn't.

Is your temperature high, too?

Make sure you are using an original key. I made a copy of my key, and the copy will not work. It will start, but then shut off. Appearantly there is a chip or something in the original.
