A few days ago I was leaving for work about 3pm. The temperature was probably about 20 degrees and it had probably gotten down to a grand 'ol temp of -15 the night before. My car is not in a garage. It started up after a couple of seconds. I was in a hurry so I didn't let it heat up. It reversed just fine out of the driveway and I put it in drive and it went about halfway down the block when I started slowing down and I wasn't able to accelerate anymore. I pulled over and let it warm up a little bit, repeatedly trying to get it to go in reverse, drive, 2, and L. I walked back home and my dad came back with me and started my car just fine. And then he moved it and turned it around the block. He said he got it to go in Low. He thought maybe the transmission fluid was low. So we took and put it in the garage, leaving it running. he checked the fluid and said it was a little low, so he added about a cup of transmission fluid. That day and night, it started and drove just fine. The next afternoon, after being at a negative temp the night before, it wouldn't go in reverse, drive or anything again. It starts fine. It just doesn't seem to be shifting into gear or even trying to. I had it towed and they said it could be toast. I just paid $3500 last March for this car. Any solution ideas would be greatly appreciated. I don't feel like junking another car.
Try putting a plug-in magnetic heater on the transmission if you know in advance that it will be that cold. your fluid might be too thick to perform its hydraulic duties. maybe a new filter too, which is located inside the pan.
I had the same problem with one of my cars and it came done to the shift selonoids in the transmision. I would have them test at a shop before you junk the car. hope this help ans thanks for using fixya.com
