I have a 1994 VW Jetta 2.0ltr manual trans. Recently put in new or slightly used transmisson to replace old one which went out. Car over all has been great to me. This is my second Jetta I have owned.
My car has been shaking or hesitating when I press the gas. It does it in just about every gear and I would say maybe more so when its warmed up. It also has been dying after Its warmed up and I stop at a store and start it again. Takes several attempts to get it to start.
We have researched this everywhere and found so many possible issues it may be. We so far have replaced the cap and master air flow censor. We also found a cracked pipe which we jimmy rigged to work until the part comes by mail.
Any help with this would be VERY APPRECIATED as we would like to avoid letting it sit in a shop. The problem seems to come and go so I have doubts a mechanic can diagnose unless its doing it then and there.

What you are describing seems to be a misfire and a flat spot. Most misfires are caused by ignition or spark problems - worn spark plugs and/or poor quality or insufficient spark. It is important not to replace things unless replacement is justified and justification is found in close inspection and thorough testing.
The hesitation or flat spot can also be caused by the same ignition troubles and also by insufficient richening of the fuel mixture when the engine is placed on sudden load.
If the trouble began when you changed the gearbox it would be wise to revisit that process. It is easy to trap, stretch or wrongly route pipes and wires during such work.

sounds like you may have a fuel delivery problem,There is a fuel regulator that keeps a steady pressure this may have the same tendencies as a fuel pump cavatating also,Have a good garage do a fuel flow test as well as a fuel pump pressure test.

Did the mechanic replace the catalytic converter? If not you can order one from Catalytic converter warehouse online it's much cheaper than having someone fix it. (With the cat problem it will cause the car' acceleration and cooling problem.) Acceleration if the cat was not changed it will have affect on accelerating. Is the check engine light on? If so you need to get the codes out go to Auto Zone they will scan it for free. ABS there's 4 sensors, one at the backside of each tire. One of them is bad and needs replaced. Transmission problem has the car ever had the trans fluid and filter changed changed? If not do so. Cooling problem sounds like the water pump. How many miles on the car? And yes you can fix it yourself which could save you alot of $$$$$$$ money.

Replace the crankshaft position sensor

Use a engine scanner to pull codes, If none it sounds like the lock-up torque converter may not be disengaging at idle. Or you have a idle air control valve or TPS going bad, then repair codes by replacing failed sensor or shift control solenoid as needed. If no codes are present your transmission could have a internal failure. It's also been know that oil transmission fluid in the system will have a higher fluid retention causing the 2nd gear solenoid to stick causing the transmission to stay in second till the line pressure rises and drops back to first with a hard shift. Keep me posted be glad to get your transmission running again.

A slight hesitation after engine shut off due to engine running rich meaning not meeting golden air:gas ratio of 14.6:1 so fuel residue in chamber continue to burn for the last moment. The same rich fuel problem that was why you had to let gas off during acceleration. Need to Check out the O2 sensor Check out MAP sensor Good luck

Have you played with the fuel distribution unit? It's very sensitive and can reek havoc with the older VW's.
