1995 Prizm Horn Problem

Thank you for your response. If its a horn ring, is that a dealer only repair and replacement item? What is the approximate cost for such a diagnostic/repair?

Last question. Is that something that a beginner like myself could do with the right CHILTON's step by step help?

The car is only worth about $1000 so trying to weigh the options.

you asked only how to access a part.
and not how to diagnose it.
why skip disgnose, and save a ton of work.
(ie: horn bench tested ok.)
horn ground not bad (rust)
horn relay good>? (if found) i have no schematics on this old car.cept engine.
have a $10 volt meter?

DISMANLE:
defeat the air bags ,or risk breaking neck.
the FSM cover that, read that first.
ok, ill read the FSM for you....its typical of all car made, with air bags.

Place the vehicle's front wheels in the straight ahead position.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Disable the Air Bag system.
Remove the inflator module as follows:
Remove the 2 side trim covers from the steering column.
Remove the 2 Torx® head screws, then release the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and disconnect the upper steering column connector.
Remove the inflator module from the steering wheel.
Disconnect the horn, and cruise control connectors, if equipped.
Place match marks on the steering wheel and shaft, then remove the steering wheel retaining nut.
Do not install the puller tool bolts more than 0.5 in. (13mm) into the steering wheel. If the bolts are extended past the steering wheel, they could contact the Air Bag coil assembly and damage it.

Remove the steering wheel puller tool J-1859-03 or equivalent.

To install:

Install the steering wheel on the shaft, aligning the matchmarks. Tighten the retaining nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).

Connect the horn, and cruise control harnesses, if equipped.

Install the inflator module as follows:

Install the inflator module to the steering wheel and connect the upper steering column connector and the CPA.

Install the 2 Torx® head screws and tighten to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).

Install the 2 side trim covers to the steering column.

Enable the Air Bag system.

How do I fix my car

If you have a factory security system, you may have an issue somewhere. In that case and you want the security system to work (I would) you need to see dealer, competent repair shop or up to date lock smith. A horn is and could be an important safety device. I wouldnt disable, I' get the it repaired. you probably have a short in the system, a bad horn ring or button, or a bad horn relay that has "welded it's points together" but unlikely.

Dealers charge approximately $75-90/hr. labor. The horn pad repair, labor-wise, can easily run 2 hrs labor plus parts. Unfortunately, the horn buttons in the pad are flimsy and break easily. This could result in more repairs later. An alternative fix, if you are not fussy about appearances, is to nount an external horn button on the dash within reach of the driver. This is legal for inspection puirposes in MOST states (check local laws). You can cut into the horn wire where it comes out of the steering column, or you can ****** it at the horn relay, whichever is more accessible. The horn button can be obtained from any auto oarts store, and will be a more permanent repair. Also, no airbag worries. While working with the wiring harness, avoid any YELLOW wires. These are normally airbag wiring.

The horn is blowing by itself and stcks on untill i hit the horn on the wheel. it is causing my battery to drain

THE CONTACTS FOR THE HORN IN THE STEERING WHEEL WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS SOMETHING YOUR DEALER WILL NEED TO DO BECAUSE OF THE AIRBAG IF SO EQUIPPED.

My horn doesn't work and the airbag light is on

Some Chrysler products have this "clockspring issue" (my Plymouth Voyager did) and it can cause those symptoms. I did an online search for recalls on the 1998 Prizm and came up with nothing mentioning a clockspring, so that is probably not be related to your car. I can think of a couple of possibilities: 1) You have two separate problems - you had an air bag issue, and now your horn died (you could try replacing your horn to see if that problem goes away).
2) You have a problem that is on a circuit that is connected to the same circuit card in the car's computer that controls the air bag and the horn, and because they're all on the same "circuit" your seeing problems in these other systems.
I would suggest doing electrical checks (fuses, wiring, connections, etc. - be careful around the airbag and it's circuitry (you might want a technician to do this).

The most common cause is that the ribbon contact drum under the steering wheel is faulty and has a broken filament. The part is called the "clock spring contact drum"

keep the steering wheel in one spot, do not rotate, check horn by pressing pad in different areas. If it is intermittent then horn pad is concern. If it works well trying slowly turning steering wheel while pressing horn pad if there is a point in turning the wheel where horn becomes inop, then the common fault is the horn contact ring inside of the steering column

1994 Geo Prizm - Horn stopped working

Sounds like you need to replace the horn. Check to make sure the horn's supply wire is getting power (check with a voltometer) if it is replace the horn. Since you are hearing a click, I believe the horn is the problem. If that doesn't fix it, let me know.
