My 2004 ford explorer brake light intermittently stay on, it will not shift out of park, and the cruise control is malfunctioning. HELP

When driving with the cruise control on when I went to depress the brake to turn it off the vehicle accelerated like the cruise was trying to take over. Now it won't shift out of park once placed in park. Also the other day my brake lights stayed on when no lights were on and the car was off.

Check all fuses for the brakes this is a warning that something is wrong that's why your locked in park also check all contacts and wires for corrosion and continuity I've seen this before and it's brake related but you must check all including the cruise control are you sure you weren't touching the set accelerator or resume buttons ? It could just be the brake light switch down at the pedal it's probably done it's 14years old now if never have been replaced good luck Stephen

SOURCE: 2003 Ford Explorer Cruise Control

Check the speed control deactivation switch on the master cylinder. disconnect and use a jumper wire to connect the wires together. If the cruise works it's the switch.

SOURCE: no tail lights

look for a blown fuse in your engine compartment fuse box. if you dont find one there then check the fuse panel in the dash under you column. it could be one of the larger feed fuses in the engine compartment fuse box so dont overlook those.

SOURCE: Stalls at low speed when in cruise control

You sould have recieved a "recall" notice in the mail about the cruise control for fire and failure issues. they are adding a fusable link where the cruise control harness connects to the brake master cylinder. if you have not had the recall performed yet you should SERIOUSLY consider getting it done, mainly so it doesnt catch fire, but "could" be the result of the failure you've been experiancing! btw, almost ALL Ford vehicles have been affected with the cruise control recall. hope this helps!

Having problem shifting from park to drive any suggestions

Sounds like you need to replace the brake light switch. This also affects cruise control and, of course, brake lights. They probably come on late and the cruise might not disengage without a bit of pedal pressure.

Stop lights, Shifting. Cruise control

Most likely you're looking at the switch by the brake pedal. (stop light switch)

That switch not only controls the rear brake lights, but also the solenoid that releases the shift lock for the shifter.

While driving home from work my ABS light illumintaed then my 4X4 high light began flashing. What do you think the problem might be?

For some year models of Explorers involved in the Cruise Control recall, there were additional wiring problems caused by the modification of the Cruise Control. These problems included yours and Brake lights working independent of the brakes. Contact a dealer about this SECOND service bulletin.

The above problems are more likely if the 4x4 is showing a light and the vehicle is in 2 wheel drive. The ABS indicator light is usually to be trusted without the Cruise problem. It would not hurt to check the brake pad linings, sometimes the lining shifts and drops down off the metal of the pads. Finally if the ABS light is still showing a problem that you can not find, check the Emergency brake pads inside the rear rotors.

Overdrive light on shifter is flashing and

There is another recall on the cruise control. The first added a fuse. This new recall is about wiring and lighting problems caused by the cruise. Everything from not shifting out of Park to no brake lights to false dash indicators. Best to contact the dealer, if it is a recall its free.

When you experience this problem, check to see if your brake lights are coming on. It could be as simple as a brake light switch malfunction. If the brake lights are functioning as the problem is occurring then you could for example have a problem with the shift interlock solenoid.

2006 Ford Explorer

I would check the wiring at the plug going into the brake light switch at the pedal. If there is a bad contact there it won't shift out of park and also you'll be having an intermittent brake light problem you aren't aware of while you're driving.
