The service engine soon light shows up on the instruction panel alot but does not show check engine light on dash?
The service engine soon could be an indicator that you need to have minor maintenance done in the near future. I had a Grand Am that the service engine light would turn on when I was getting close to needing an oil change. You might check your owners manual for an exact reason as to why it turns on.
Whoever changed the oil last failed to clear the service light.

hi
im dave
to clear the codes stored remove the negative battery cable for about five minutes. Reistall the cable then turn the car on the light should be out . If it comes back on then there is a fault with one of your sensors and you need to pull the code
let me know

you need to put it on a computer to find what the code is such as on o2 sensor or a number of other things. once you know the codes you can fix the problem

I have the same car and if the gas cap is loos for any reason the service engine light will come on so check that. If it is it will turn off in a few days after you tighten it.

My 2002 pontiac has the exact same problem. I took it to my trustworthy mechanic and he told me that there is three Oxygen sensors in the emissons system. This light came on when one of them went bad. He said it is no big deal to have one go out, however if the second one goes out the car will start missing and running rough. Keep an eye on the performance of your car and if it does not dimenish then you should be alright. Fyi the oxygen sensor costs about $80 plus labor to replace it.

It is one of your wheel bearings. The problem is easily solved by taking the car to a dealer, or having a code reader, and determining which wheel bearing is bad. The wheel bearing is under $150 and should be installed by someone with some muscle, as the bolts are torqued from the factory extremely tight in a tight location. The wheel bearing have all of your sensors for abs built into them and if that sensor goes out your computer tells the abs and traction control to shut down, hence you get the lights on on the dash.
