Truck wont shift automatic. stays in 3rd gear. can shift manually

2001 dakota. 5.9litre with 46re transmission. 3speed auto with overdrive. started making rattling type noise when accellerating. thought it was front end at first. then truck wouldnt shift into overdrive. no noise is louder and truck wont even shift through gears, stays in 3rd even when starting out. revs to 2000rpm just to get moving. any ideas????

    transmission was rebuilt 40000kms or 24000 miles ago at a cost of $3600. hoping it will be warrantied. but my neighbour says he thinks it the torque converter. says its a common problem with dodge. says thats where the rattle noise comes from. fluid level is good and doesn't smell or look burnt. rattle noise speeds up as truck speeds up. whats your opinion???

    thanks for your opion.much apprieciated. any other thoughts on my dilema are welcomed. the engine light came on when the problem started the other day. hoping that it will read a code that explains something. I will be taking it back to the tranny shop tomorrow and praying for warranty!!!!

    tarnny shop said it was better than factory when they rebuilt it, but factory got 195000kms before breakdown, this time only 40000kms. Different issues this time though. ARRGGGH!!!

    the speedometer is not working, and the transmission stays on 3rd gear. Engine starts and idles then dies after a few minutes

Either repair or replace the transmission...sounds like the sensor went out

    it could be the torque converter but ive never heard of one rattling around like that.usually if the torque converter goes the transmission wont work at all. it just stops working completely.

    i would say the shop didnt do something quite right but as far as thr tranny i would say that it could be a number of things that could cause the problem you are having, i wish you the best on the warranty issue and i hope you get it fixed right this time

the spares department will be working off the results of a build of material issued from the factory for what was installed into each vehicle for certain vin numbers or build dates
That is why they ask for date and year of manufacture and the vin number if there is a cross over of equipment installed
if you consider that you have something different , take it to an accredited professional tansmissio shop and have it properly identified and then use that identification when ordering parts

I have a 1993 f-250 u have to manually shift to 1st to take off shift to 2nd and still in 1st gear. Shift to overdrive and transmission will shift through 2nd 3rd 4th and then to overdrive with no problem....
When was last trans fluid & filter change? Should be done every 30k/3 years or sooner of you do any towing. I'd start there and get it flushed thoroughly.

2000 es300 lexus auto w overdrive button overdrive 4th gear not work
There isn't anything wrong with your car. This is perfectly normal. I have a 2000 ES300 as well as other people that I know and it operates in the same way. Overdrive doesn't mean the same thing for every car or transmission. In our case overdrive is simply a reference to the top gear which is 4th gear. When you switch overdrive off(which is depressing the button causing the O/D OFF dash light to illuminate,) the highest gear becomes 3rd because you turned 4th gear or overdrive off. The application scenario for this is usually mountainous terrain where a lot of uphill driving makes it more feasible not to up shift into 4th gear while ascending and descending. It will not switch back to overdrive or 4th gear until you re-engage it by turning the overdrive back on or repressing the button. Again, when the O/D OFF dash light is illuminated, overdrive which is 4th gear is off and the highest gear will then become 3rd. It will never shift into 4th gear while this light is illuminated or overdrive is off. When you press the button and the O/D OFF dash light is NOT illuminated overdrive is on and therefore it will shift into 4th gear as usual. This applies to all 97-2001 ES300's and probably any other car you drive tat exhibits this same type of change when overdrive is turned off.
