I have a similar problem with my 1999 Pontiac Grand Am. The car will turn on just fine, but when I turn it off, the ignition won't turn past the ACC position. I use graphite spray to lubricate the ignition key hole and it seems to temporarily resolve the issue (it didn't fix the problem and the issue seems to get worse over time.) I have a feeling, the problem is with dirt or rust deposits in the ignition lock. I'm going to try cleaning the key hole with a light oil solvent, followed by some canned air to blow out the residue. Then a light coat of graphite spray. I'll post results. (replacement parts are 119.00 bucks for my car, so...let's try the 10 dollar solution first.)

sounds like your shift lever for trans isnt making a tight connection when you put it in park....try shifting it in and out of park several times while trying to remove key......my lincoln does that occasionally and when i take it out of park and then back in it works......just a thought

I had a problem like this - where the key would NOT go to lock when you shifted to PARK an tried to turn off the engine - I fiddled with it for a bit and finally discovered that when I put the transmission in into park I needed to pull back just a bit so that the lock cylinder would know that the vehicle is in park. I tried it several times both with and without pulling back a tad on the shifter after placing in PARK. Each time I did not pull back on the shifter it would NOT let me remove the key, EVERY time I pulled back on the shifter a tad - it would allow me to remove the key. Someone tell me why ? Adjustment ? I hope so...

It's part of the steering lock mechanism causing the issue. You probably turned everything off while the wheels were off center. Grab your steering wheel and pull it counter-clockwise with some strength and at the same time, try turning your ignition key. It should release.
