My 2001 has the same problem. I lost fan setting #4 last year, now this year I lost #3 and to boot, the controler knob broke! I've been trying to find a low price fix, maybe this will work instead of replacing the entire switch unit. My 2001 has the same problem. I had this same thing happen to me in a Buick Lesabre. It ended up being the blower relay. There was 2 relays for the blower motor. One was called the high blower relay which controlled the high speed. The one that fixed the problem was the blower relay that powered up all the other speeds. I hope this helps.
Sounds like the blower motor or the connection to it is failing.Next time it stops give the area below the glove compartment a good whack,if the blower does anything, change it.
Yes I would go with the switch, BUT, does it have a resistor bank? That is, how does it reduce the speed? Many systems use resistors to lower the speed. Burnt or bad connections can cause this as well.
You can test the blower motor by connecting direct power from a source like the cigarette lighter if you are handy.
Most of the time the lower speeds konk out but the high speed continues to work this is the resistor bank that goes out.
Check for un-isulated connection on the hot wire lead. It might have been after-market but on mine the connection would short out, blowing a fuse. 1 inch of heat shrink tube fixed the problem.
This may be the AC compressor cycling switch is defective. It is located in the larger of the 2 AC lines coming from the compressor, it has a wire connector to it with 2-3 wires. To verify this is the issue jumper the connector with a small piece of wire and see if the compressor runs.
