This may sound stupid but it WILL work. Have someone locate the starter. Tap it with a hammer while someone cranks over the key. If it starts it is the solenoid. Most come with the new starters. To make sure the engine is not locked up, put a socket on the Generator pulley or whatever you can and try to turn it clockwise. If it turns the engine is OK.

My factory alarm is now armed permanently and the engine will crank but not start. I pulled the alarm module with the ignition off which I understand could have caused a more serious lockdown. I have...

If the alarm is not factory fitted:
Trace wire out of the module which will lead you to the immobiliser.Wires from the ignition barrel will be conacted there.remove module and connect wires to start car.
Wire will be from ignition switch to starter
Join wires in red and it should start.

There is a loud clicking from the engine compartment when the ignitionswitch is activated and the engine doesn't turn over.

Have you had the battery tested or replaced ?
Checked for loose cables ?

The clicking is the solenoid on the starter

That could be bad or the starter it's self

Rodeo just clicks ,not battery or starter what next?

Turn on the interior lights. Try to start the engine. If the starter solenoid clicks and , the interior lights doesn't change intensity, then you have to troubleshoot the starter. If the interior lights dims then something at starter or engine is jammed.
If you suspect anything wrong with the starter let me know, and a will tell you how to troubleshoot the starter.
