I need to repair my instrument cluster. The tachometer goes all the way over without stopping. The speedometer works, but I have to manually push the needle to zero when I crank it. My gas gauge moves on it's own and sometimes sticks. Always changes when I crank it up. It is not accurate at all. I know the sensor in the gas tank is good so it has to be the gauges in the cluster...thanks
This may sound a little funny, but hands on experience is the best. go to a junk yard and experiment as to how to get it apart. Manuals do not always give you the little details you need to know. I have done this some times and it works out great when it comes to working on my own. You may also fine a good cluster that works at a good price.

GM has a problem with clusters but the government nor GM will do a recall on the clusters. Check ur local yellow pages for a Speedometer fix company , if u cant find one hit me back and I can find one for you.. In Houston we pay $250 for the service.

If the speedo isn't working properly, the first thing to check is the output speed sensor wires on the rear right side (near the bar code) of the tranny case. Follow the wires and make sure it hasn't been cut, pinched or shorted.
If all is well there, take the output speed sensor off. Watch out cause you'll get wet with tranny fluid (Dexron 6). (Be ready to plug it up.) If there are no metal chips or debris on the magnet inside, check it with an ohmeter on the two pins to see what the reading is. It should be around 6 to 10 ohms. If it's not steady, get a new one. Make sure the pins are clean on the connectors.
Apply some white or build grease around the shaft and "O" ring and re-install. Don't overtighten. The bolt is a "tap-tite" and should need only about 5 or 6 ft/lbs torque. (Run it in and give the bolt a quarter turn.)

sometimes when the battery is too low the gages will go haywire.check you battery terminals for good conductivity and current levels. sounds like a low current problem.computer runs on 12 volts not 11 or 10. low current will give poor performance and bad electrical response.
try that first then look for shorts under the dash ie naked wires or burnt wires.
good luck.

I have the same problem.. i installed a toggle switch for the fuse so at least I can reset it while driving.. its still a pain so Im thinking my next step will be to drill a hole through the plastic and put in a small metal post to stop the tach from going past 7
has anyone taken theirs into a shop?

On the 03-05 Cavalier instrument clusters this is a common problem, it's caused by failing stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board. It can be repaired though, check out this site for more on how to get it fixed - Cavalier instrument cluster repair
