My toyota was doing the harsh shift issue, took out the ECM and had it rebuilt, the guy said it was too far gone, he has to send me a different rebuilt one, so now I have sent him $450 total. Took it to Toyota and had them 'flash' the ECM, they said it was driving awesome, tried to drive it home and it is worse than before, took back to Toyota and they said it could be a bad ECM OR my Transmission.....can't believe they don't know which one it is. They want me to buy a new ECM from them for $1000 and if that doesn't work, then buy a transmission. I don't kow what to do

This is a known condition. And, is under warranty.
Take your vehicle to a Toyota dealership. Ask them to replace your ECU per TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) TC015-07. The new ECU has redesigned logic that rectifys your condition.

Not likely to be the clutch pack as you dont mention slipping wich is the normal sign of overheated or worn clutch bands. Not sure with your vehicle but 2 methods that control the shift severity are engine vacuum or pump pressure inside the auto. so check balls are a possibility. They are spring loaded to open at a set pressure,or close.Could you check to see if its a vacuum controled and if so its a lot easier to fix as the vacuum control should be outside the trans.

The ECM (or, Electronic Control Module) is covered by the factory warranty for 96 months, or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first. Have your dealer refer to Toyota technical service bulletin "TC002-06" for info proving this. The fix is to replace the ECM. If you are below the above parameters, the repair should be free.
Also, if you have ever had your transmission fluids changed, it is CRITICAL that you use a specific auto transmission fluid, Toyota type "T-IV". Any other fluid will cause you problems. Please feel free to respond if you have any other questions; and Thnaks for choosing FixYa!

I don't know where you got the price quote, but a new one will be $3700 (Then you will need to pay an additional $350 for installation)
A rebuilt is $3300 (Not including removal and reinstallation)
A used one if you can find one will run about $1750 (then you will need to pay an additional $350 for installation)
You can check new, used and rebuilt price here
Give me you state and zip and I will find a local shop that can do it.
Please rate this a fixya
