1995 Jeep Wrangler Auto Trans 1st to 2nd shift acts like it goes into neutral what could the problem be

When starting from a dead stop, auto trans starts out moving in first gear fine but when it shifts to second at acts just like you put it in neutral. If you race the motor, it will eventually shift up into second. Sometimes the motor will race just a little then shift other times I have to race the motor hard before it will shift up to second. Other shifting to other gear changes are fine.

When was the last time the transmission fluid and filter changed? I would have that serviced first. If it is an electronic transmission, the line pressure might also have to be reset.

SOURCE: 1989 jeep cherokee 6cly auto trans shifts great

Sometimes you tranny may just be low in which case add fluid. Be sure to check while engine is hot, most likely in park or nuetral. It will say on dipstick. Also if you havent changed the filter you may want to do that, sometimes crud gets built up and it will not circulate well unless hot. If you change the filter, be careful as usually there is not a drain plug and the only way is to drop the pan. If you do go that route I advise buying a drain plug and drill a hole in pan and replace with plug so in the future theres less mess and a whole lot easier job. Hope this helps. Be sure to read directions on drilling hole for plug and be sure its drilled somewhere on the pan that doesnt get in the way of anything underneath.

SOURCE: When I start out 1st gear is fine but when it

Sounds like an internal pressure problem, check the oil condition(does it smell burnt and look dark brown ) if so get the transmission pressure checked at a garage and possible overhaul may be needed. Good luck big $ required.

it sounds like the shift cable is binding or just plain loose.

check the cable for correct alignment in park first and try shifting it again

Can I tow my 4X4 auto grand cherokee behind a Mtr Hm? I will put everything in N (transfer case & Trany)

I have a jeep wrangler and to have it towed you are suppose to put the transverecase in neutral after you first depress brake pedal put trans in neutral then start engine shift auto trans into drive release brake pedal make sure there is no movement, shut engine off with key left in acc position shift auto trans into park, disconnect neg battery cable (damage can result in trans if shifted into park while transvere case is in neutral with engine running) you should refere to your owners manuel

Shifting lever doesnt lock

Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.

2002 jeep wrangler 4.0 auto will not start, maybe shift sensor??

Neutral safety switch is either bad or out of adjustment. On stickshift cars, usually found above clutch pedal. On automatics, aw4 trans is on passenger side of trans, On 727 Chrysler trans it's on the top left rear edge of trans casting just above the pan.

Tranny in my 1998 jeep wrangler takes off in second gear from dead stop if i punch it it will kick into drive it shifts fine after you start to move

The trans in your vehicle is a 3 speed auto,A904 model, also designated the 30RH or32RH.The trans is totally hydraulic,no electronic controls with the exception of tcc apply, aka, lockup. The vehicle shifts from throttle pressure and a governor. The governor is inside the tailhousing of the trans and is responsible for the road speed signal in this trans. If the valves in the governor start sticking, the vehicle will take off in 2nd gear. The valves can be cleaned, and sometimes jarred loose, but the more pressing concern is why are the valves sticking? The valves will start sticking when other parts of the trans starts making metal. So the governor sticking can sometimes be the symptom of a larger problem.Pull the trans pan and look for metal, and if so, how bad?One way to clear the governor of debris is to find an abandoned road or parking lot.At a complete stop, engage Reverse gear, and back up as fast as you dare.I have backed cars up at 20-30 mph before, but wouldn't recommend you to.This can blow debris out of the governor hydraulic circuits, and free the governor valves as highest line pressure inside the trans is obtained in Reverse gear.Good luck.
