The starter is located at the rear of the engine on the bottom left, There are 2 bolts and wires bolted on, remove the battery cable off the battery before going after the starter, that way way you don't short it out removing the wires in a tight spot. The starter is heavy and bulky, don't let it drop, hope this helps.

The starter on 4th generation (1995-1999) Nissan Sentras is very easy to locate and replace. It is a mostly-black cylinder, about 9 or 10" long and 3" thick, that sits on the front center of the engine. It is held on by 2 bolts, and has 2 wires connected. The 2 bolts come off easily, one of the wires simply comes unplugged easily, and the other has a small bolt holding it on.

Replacement may involve removing a bracket that holds the throttle (gas pedal) in a certain position, because there may not be enough room to work with that bracket in place. Removing and replacing that bracket (which is held onto the engine block by 2 bolts), does not affect the operation of the car.

If this is the first time the starter is having issues, replacement can be put off for a couple weeks by taking a small hammer (or something similar) and hitting the starter. Don't hit it too hard, but don't be too gentle. It might take several hits to get it to work. This is only a temporary solution. The starter WILL have to be replaced eventually.

I copied this directly out of my manual.

Starter removal:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. On models equipped with a V6 engine, raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands.

2. Remove the wires from the starter solenoid. Label the wires and terminals to prevent confusion during installation.

3. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts.

4. Lift out the starter motor and solenoid.
5. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

it smoths out because you can't here the miss check fuel pressure and check for vachum leaks and build up on throttle plate.

I'm pretty sure the last time I did this, I went through the right front wheel well after removing the tire. You may have to remove a clamp or two that hold some some steel hydraulic lines, just bend them a little out of the way and you will have access.

MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST! The starter is mounted on the right lower side of the engine. If you have a 4X4 it will be much tougher to get to. The wire are mounted on the top on the starter. There is one small wire that simply clips on and then there is the big fat battery cable that is held on with a 12mm nut.
