I replaced the starter but then noticesd a braided wire coming from the bracket that holds on fuel filter and has a a loop to go around a bot on the other end that is not connected and dont remember where it came off.I drove it about a mile it died and started smoking frim battery area .know if i connect battery it acts as there is a huge short somewhere

Just because it is a braided wire does not
mean it is a GROUND...!!
Your MAIN POWER FEED comes from the hot side
of your starter solenoid... (and BEFORE fusible links).
CAREFULLY inspect your battery cable
insulation has not been destroyed.
Remove ALL the wires and cables
and DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE you ability
to BLOW-UP your battery (in your face).
Only connect the wires you have CLEARLY
IDENTIFIED... & inspected.

Sounds like the ground strap isn't connected from the engine to the body. That would cause smoke

How long did the 2nd alt. last before it died? The voltage regulator is, I believe, attached to the alternator. Have u had the voltage regulator checked?

I'm pretty sure the last time I did this, I went through the right front wheel well after removing the tire. You may have to remove a clamp or two that hold some some steel hydraulic lines, just bend them a little out of the way and you will have access.
