When I try and put the car into gear, there are not gears. Normally when I put the car into gear, I can feel the grooves for first, second, ect. But now I can just move the shifter in circles. What do I do? Is the transmition dead or what?
The gears my be fine need to remove the boot around your shifter make sure everything is connected still should have a cable shifter in it. if it is all hooked up there open the hood and look on top of the transmission it will have a lever the move back n forth to shift for each gear the other end of your cable attaches to the lever should have a either a plastic bushing or clip attaching it to the lever some time those wear the it pops off
have somebody move the shift around and see if it moves if it dont you need a shifter cable.
if it does then before you go any further reach down with your hand or a screw drive or pry bar if you cant get you hands to it with the clutch engaged you should be able to shift it into gear maunaly and feel it go in jus like you would if you was doin it from in the car make sure your gently so you dont bend anything if you can feel it go into each gear make sure your adjust the cable to where everything works

I had the same problem. The interlock was not the problem. I had the shifter replaced (at my own expense because drive train warranty would not cover). After examining the old shifter discovered source of problem is a plastic cam on the front of ths shifter. A tiny PLASTIC ear which connects to a small spring had broken off. I repaired this by putting in a small screw where the ear had been. Incidentally, my tow truck driver had also seen the same problem on several Chrysler 300s. In my estimation this is a poor design on Chrysler's part.

You need to free up your throttle pressure control cable linkage that sits above your shift cable linkage at the top of your transaxle on drivers side. I had the same problem from time to time, caused it to stay in lower gear longer, and shift down hard when slowing down. Happened more when I drove it a little harder as pushing gas pedal further down causes it to rotate, but then sticks & doesn't come back right a way. Free it up with penetrating lube first, then put a good coat of spray grease like white lithium after its moving freely again, and it should be problem free for a while. You may have to move some things to get at it. If you need a picture email ([email protected]), seeing how I can't seem to figure out how to send it from here.
SOURCE: Dodge Neon 2005) Car will not start.
I was having the same exact problem with my 2005 neon as well. The guy at Discount auto suggested the starter itself was the problem(cost approx $200). The car isn't old enough to be having a starter issue so I figured it was something more simplilar. My dad took a look and founf out it was the starter relay. It is located in the black fuse/relay box on the driver's side right next to the battery. I had to get a new relay at the dealership(cost $20) and my car starts perfectly. Hope this helps

RUN it could be a bad tranny
Or have it checked by a pro tranny mechanic just in case it is only a sensor issue, i see a lot of neons with this problem.
