5th. Gear Was on road trip had all 5 gears stopped for coffee lost 5 gear but still works great 1-4 1992 jeep wrangler 4x4 5 speed manual transmission. 1st through 4th gears not a problem. Put it in 5th but it doesn't feel engaged. Gas it, motor revs, terrible grinding sound from tranny, and no power to wheels.

what does stopped working mean .
1: shifter fails to select 5 gear H pattern slot.
2: grinds?
3: cant force it to 5th with clutch depressed.? is free play at spec?
4: raise front wheels off ground, can you get in to 5th now? keyout and running?
5: can you get into 5th parked engine off, and select 5th and then start car in 5th with clutch depresses first step. then slowly very slowly attempt to move car starting in 5th, but dont finish, just feel the gear, feel that its there and not neutral.

not working ,says nothing at all.

Remove the transmission & open it up to diagnose

what gear? if its the 5th in the nv4500 there is only one fix, none of the others work! there is a new shaft from quad 4x4 that is a after market gear assembly that will be the last time ever 5th gear comes off guaranteed . about $2800 up to do

Drain the oil out of your manual tranny into a CLEAN bucket. Run your fingers through it. Does it look like you've got splotches of silver paint? If so, your tranny's bearings and/or gears may be wearing out.

You don't provide much information to go on (type of vehicle, type of engine, 2wd or 4wd, etc.) RPM is always going to be based on the speed you're traveling with a standard transmission. My 4 cyl 5 speed Nissan pickup in 5th gear runs at 3000 RPM at about 75mph.

The syncronizers and blocker ring are damaged some stores like auto zone have a super synthetic gear lube I had this problem in my 95 wrangler and the problem went away. Its going to be hard to find tranny parts for that car I just put a new tranny in from the junk yard with 70k miles for $200 its in perfect operating condition.

shift tranny from 1st-3rd if engine revs up clutch needs replacing

you should of stopped and picked it up. just kidding! do you mean it wont go into gear or when it is in gear nothing happens

transmission is on its way out and will need to be rebuilt drive it as long as you can live without 5 gear.
