2001 Subaru outback 2.5 litre engine surge and "Tock" noise from under passenger side

I have a 2001 Subau Outback, 2.5 litre, standard transmission. At 40 miles per hour, shifting correctly, the engine will start to surge. Immediately after it surges there is a "tock" noise just like you get when you stick your tongue on the roof of your mouth and quickly remove it., The "tock" noise sounds like it is coming from under the passengers side front door. The car threw a Po 420 code a couple of days ago. I have not had the chance to check the cat or replace the O2 sensor. Could you give me some insight as to whether the code, the surging, and the noise could be related? Thanks.

SOURCE: 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon (100K miles) with P0420 Code

I do not know for sure if this is the problem you are having, But, I have noticed that from 95 up to 2002 I have seen a lot of PO420 codes that have been just the sensor. I do not know if it was a weak sensor or just that program telling it that it is below threshold. I did notice that if the vehicles are run for a long trip at highway speed it goes out. I wish you luck and have a great day.

2000 Subaru outback manual transmission makes a popping grinding sound in first gear.

most four wheel drives do not spin both front tires other wise you would hop around corners, that being said you should be able to stop the spinning side tire by holding it in place ,do this before the tire starts spinning ,then the other side should spin.if not you have a problem start with the axle and work your way back in the drive train, simple process of elimination..the grinding noise sounds like a broken gear tooth in the tranny.requires tear down and replace gear.take it to a professional.hope this helps

My 2001 Subaru Outback doesn't show a transmission dipstick. The manual has a diagram but there's no dipstick there. It just started kicking between gears, 1. Where's the dipstick? 2. How many miles can I...

It just all depends on the fluid level. It probably needs changed around 50,000-60,000 miles. Sometimes, the dipstick is under the car. It is not an actual dipstick. It is much smaller but it is located on the side of the transmission. I would check down there to see if it is on the side.

Trying to find the location of the fuel pump relay in a 1997 4cyc outback looked under driverside dash but didnt find it

most fuel pump relays are located in the main fuse box, under the hood. look for a black box on the drivers side,or passenger side fenderwell under the hood. lift cover off and look on underside of the fuse box lid for location of the fuel pump relay and main engine fuse.hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

2003 Subaru Outback 3.0 automatic transmission.

Hello, from your description it sounds like your front differential has, for lack of a better term, exploded! the grinding noise is the ring and pinion in the front differential trying to turn w/ the rest of the transmission but most or all of the gear teeth have been broken off. There are 3 sections of your transmission: the front section which is the front differential, the center section which is where all of your main clutch packs and planetary gear sets are, and the rear section which houses your tranfer clutches. Your front differential contains gear oil and the center and rear section contains auto trans fluid. You need to check your front diff fluid, this is the fluid that is most likely covering your undercarriage. Usually this concern can be repaired as long as the damage isn't to great, but to assess the damage the transmission must be removed and pulled apart. Here is a diagram of where to find your front diff dip stick.
The dip stick is located on the opposite side of where the transmission fluid dip stick is. It's yellow and you have to be standing on the passengers' side of the engine compartment, make sure the engine is cold so you won't get burned, not that you'd be driving it anyway. You must reach down just behind the bell housing on the side of the transmission itself and just lift straight up. I hope this info helps...(subytech1)...

Where is the fusebox for the 2001 Subaru Outback? My window washer is not squirting water and not making any noise like it wants to work... so wanted to see if it was a fuse. Thanks you in advance!

Have you recently had any service work done? I only ask because I know when replacing spark plugs or doing other svc work it was common to disconnect the washer tank an pump to complete the service. so check an make sure the green connetor is conected to the pump on the side of the tank. And the fuse box is under the hood on the pass.side near the rear of the engine. let me know what you come up with!
