98 Ford Explorer wont move in reverse or overdrive

I have a 1998 Explorer with a auto trans that will try to move in revese and Drive but cant seem to get going. I can use all other gears if I manualy shift from one to another. We can turn over drive off and start off in Low 2, and when vehicle gets to aprox 35 mph manualy shift to drive, then when speed reachs aprox 45 to 50 push the OD button to turn OD back on and trans will shift into overdrive and go fine. On reverse only thing that will work on it is to throttle and get vehicle moving and once it starts rolling just keep it going. This has been going on for several months but couple months ago it started working fine and lasted until couple weeks ago and is back to the problerm described. When problem started changed fluid added LUCAS, tryed Sea Foam trans tune and nothing worked until like descrided 3-4 months later started working fine and worked for 1-2 months and has quit again. Looking for suggestions prior to rebuilding transmission.

SOURCE: not shfiting right

eric sounds like you have a electronic trans mission or computer controled trans.is the check engine light on ?

second it sounds like your trans is in limp in mode ( only has second gear).

the hard shifts is not good news.

somtimes when the controller sets a code that forces limp in it has to be cleared.

dis-connect the battery for a few min. then try it again see if it shifts but be easy on it and make sure fluid level is good.

if it it still messes up CHA CHING hehe i'll fix it fer 1000 bucks

Why does the overdrive light keep blinking in my 98 Ford Explorer?

When the overdrive lamp flashes it's a warning that the transmission has a concern that is either internal or external (wiring, computer). A scan will need to be performed to determine which part of the transmission is at fault. Many auto parts stores will perform a free scan however many cheaper testers will not pick up transmission codes. The overdrive servo in the Explorer trans has often caused problems with the return spring breaking. This is a repair that can be made without removing the trans. Another concern could be a shift solenoid not operating properly. The trans pan would have to be removed to address a solenoid issue. Internal gears/clutches are also a possibility. Repairs for this concern could run from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Diagnosis would run from $0 - $150.00. Good luck.

My ford explorer reverse do not work

change the fluid and filter in the transmission ASAP and that should take care of your problem. if you drive it too long like that you may not be able to save it.

98 ford explorer will drive but you put in in reverse will not go

It is possible that the shift linkage is out of adjustment and is going into neutral and not making it to Reverse, try moving the gear selector slowly from park, through reverse to Neutral, and see if it will go into reverse somwhere in between. If this does not work ,you may have Reverse gear failure, a common problem with explorer/ranger transmissions. unfortunatly it requires rebuilding the transmission
