Installed new battery in 2001 Nissan Quest backwards
When a new battery was installed the installer hooked the battery terminals up backwards positive to negative, negative to positive. Once figured out the batery was hooked up properly. The vehicle won't start, won't turn over at all. The vehicle is completely dead. Checked the battery and it is holding its charge. Could it have blown the main or alternator fusable link? Or is there most likely worse damage?
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Dan

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly (Electrician since late 1960's)
Ground goes to the - pole. Hooking it up backwards can damage your alternator, wiring harnesses and fuse links. (Fuse link damage is a nightmare to sort out!) What you do by hooking up a battery backwards is turn your vehicle wiring harness into a giant heating element. (<-Very bad!) If you just changed the battery and then you hooked up the cables with the smoking cable result you certainly did connect the cables backwards. The ground cable... will connect to chassis and in most cases the engine body / transmission somewhere.
The positive cable will eventually connect to the starter. Follow the ground lead from the battery to the chassis or engine body connection. (metal to metal contact) Once your sure that is the ground cable; connect it to the - post of the battery AFTER connecting the positive post terminal.
If you have a newer audio system you will have lost your radio codes. We can not provide the codes for anti-theft reasons. Activation Codes must be from the car dealer or audio system retailer.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly
All Mercedes are negative ground and you should be able to follow the ground terminal a short distance directly to the body.. Do not hook it up backwards.
I just installed an after market radio in my 94 Quest. The easiest way is to buy a Nissan Quest Radio Wiring Harness for Premium Sound.
It will have the complete wire hookups.
You can also hook up the blue wire from the new radio to thefactory (I think Blue or Blue/White) wire on the harness.
That will turn the factory amp on.Hope this helps ,good luck

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Starter Motor
WARNING: WHEN SERVICING THE STARTER MOTOR OR PERFORMING OTHER UNDERHOOD WORK IN THE VICINITY OF THE STARTER MOTOR, BE AWARE THAT THE HEAVY GAUGE BATTERY INPUT LEAD AT THE STARTER SOLENOID IS "ELECTRICALLY HOT" AT ALL TIMES. A PROTECTIVE BOOT IS PROVIDED OVER THIS TERMINAL ON ALL VEHICLE LINES AND MUST BE REPLACED AFTER SERVICING. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE BEFORE SERVICING THE STARTER MOTOR. Removal
Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301).
Remove the engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600). Refer to Section 03-12 for the removal and installation procedure.
Slide back the protective boot and remove the nut securing the battery positive cable on the B-terminal of the starter solenoid (11390).
Remove the battery positive cable from the B-terminal.
Disconnect the S-terminal electrical connector.
Remove the two starter motor bolts.
Remove the starter motor (11002) from the vehicle.
The negative terminal on the battery is the one with the minus, usually the positive is red. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery for safety. Then follow the cable to where it attaches to either the engine block or the body. They unbolt it and replace it. You shouldn't have to remove the battery for this. Just don't mess with the positive terminal. You will have to reset the radio stations etc since battery is disconnected. If the connection at the negative side is corroded, just cut it and reconnect it with a new battery terminal. A parts store can hook you up with that.

THE ORIGINAL VIBRATION MAY HAVE BEEN TIRES.IF THE LUG NUTS WERE NOT TORQUED BY HAND BUT OVERTIGHTED W/AN AIR RATCHET THE ROTORS MAY HAVE BEEN WARPED.TAKE IT BACK TO WERE THE TIRES WERE INSTALLED AND ASK THEM TO CHECK IT OUT.
The hard part is pressing the caliper piston abck into the caliper so you can get the new, thicker pads over the rotor. A large C Clamp works best.
