2002 Liberty Knocking

Had and oil change, all ok for 24 hrs, next morning started vehicle and is is knocking and white smoke out of tail pipe. Oil level good, oil light not on, filter also good. I am thinking oil punp. Any ideas?

White Smoke is Coolant and a possible head gasket issue

  • Jorge Gutierrez Jun 07, 2012

I have checked the coolant level and it is good, also the oil level is at the fill mark and there does not appear to be any discoloration on the oil indicating coolant mixed with it. it is still knocking it appears to come from the passenger side on the back plug. Some on suggested loose rocker arm, this engine has overhead cam so that rules that out. I performed a second oil change and filter and added an oil additive. No change. I am out of ideas. Help please Could there be a problem with the oil pump? how can you check it other than replace it. Oil light has not come on but check engile light comes and goes.
    Thanks

I first would check th eoil to make sure they put the correct ammount of oil in. This sounds like no oil, over oil, or blown gasket

You can pull the oil pan and clean off the screen of the oil pump. It may be clogged. Or clean out the entire thing.

SOURCE: Oil light comes on and the engine begins to make a knocking sound

how much oil is left in the engine ?
the smoke was probaly oil burning, the knocking could be from low oil pressure, this could be very bad.check the oil and coolant levels and repost and let me know how they are.if any oil shows on the dipstick smell it and see if it smells burnt.

SOURCE: White Smoke From Tail Pipe/Exhaust

It often means that you are burning antifreeze. You asked if it needs antifreeze, have you noticed any leaking out of the reservoir tank while you are running it? Sometimes when the head gasket goes it will produce a passage for the antifreeze to pass from the capillaries into the combustion chamber. It is easy to check if you have an air compressor. Remove one of the rear sparkplugs and the radiator cap. Fill the radiator and then push some air into the sparkplug hole (get a good seal in case a valve is open). Repeat with all the cylinders and watch for air bubbles coming up into the radiator. If bubbles come up or fluid is pumped out, the head gasket is blown and must be replaced. It is more likely to happen at the back of the engine because it is farthest away from the fan and therefore gets less cooling. Also check your oil for discoloration. If it is a brownish color it could mean your oil and antifreeze are mixing and has the potential to damage your bearings

SOURCE: car is hard to start, keeps stalling, white smoke coming out of tail pipe

It sounds to me like you have a head gasket leaking. See if you can get a gauge and check each cylinder. Are you using alot of anti freeze?

SOURCE: 2003 Jeep Liberty. Changed oil, running very rough and dies.

Buy some Marvel Mystery oil from Auto Zone and add it to you engine oil. Keep an eye on your engine oil level everyday with the Marvel in there and change the engine oil every 3000 miles. Hope the Marvel will clean out the lifters for you and the rest of the sludge in the engine. Do Not Use Engine Flush!!!! There know to eat the seals and kill engine sensors.
The EGR could also be stuck with carbon build up and may need to be cleaned or replaced. Try doing this, turn your radio off and disconnect the battery for a min, turn the ignition key to the run position and re connect the battery then start the liberty. That should reset the air idle control valve
Let it idle down and then go for a test drive after it warms up. Good luck and keep me posted, while your at Auto Zone have them scan your liberty for any DTC codes. Be glad to help.

When I start engine engine noise or knock, white smoke comes out exhaust,

It is actually steam. The head gasket has failed and the knock is either the pistons trying to compress liquid or the oil has been thinned out from the coolant.

Loud knocking (sounds like lifters) and blueish smoke from tail

Sounds like head gasket trouble. Thicker oil seems strange thing to do.

My 01 gmc jimmy made a loud pop and white smoke started blowing out from under the hood. Now it makes a knocking sound but not like its low on oil or inside the motor. I dont have water in my oil and now...

The smoke under hood means that u need replace gasket between exhaust pipe and engine but smoke and knocking is not very good, it looks like your engine pistons has cracks and u r loosing oil by smoke time to time, i'd buy used engine from crashed car with less miles on it

2004 Jeep Liberty it pasing oil an prestone that just apend onse

is it leaking, or burning in the combustion chamber? Comming out the tail pipe? Blue smoke is oil, white smoke is water, black smoke is carbon. Smell your exaust; smell like "prestone"? Does the engine over heat? My guess would be a bad head gasket. Is the oil a light brown color?

white smoke is a sign of coolant in the combustion chamber, coupled with the oilleakage points me to the head gasket

White smoke is not good. But it may not be what white smoke typically is, which is coolant leaking into combustion chamber... but rather a backfire dislodging exhaust particles.

Get the error codes read and you will be able to know where to go next.

2004 Cadillac Escalade knocking noise

Make sure oil level is adequate.

Also, this could be an exhaust leak that is being closed as the manifold and/or block heats up.
