Sounds like you have a electrical short in the brake light switch. Finding electrical issues can be a bit tricky but I would start with the under dash relay you hear clicking when you depress the brake pedal.
Year/make/model?? Try disconnecting the electrical connector at the master cylinder to see if the light goes out. If it does, suspect a float issue in the reservoir. If light stays on, disconnect plug at park brake to see if it goes out. If it does, suspect park brake switch issue
When the van was parked, was it in an area where mice or other rodents could get to it? If so, check for chewed wires near top of engine compartment and under van near starter.
I believe therre was a recall for this problem on the windstars. They have to add an additional small wiring harness to the ABS/Brake system Call a dealer, Have your VIN number ready
Replace the alternator, and clean the battery cable ends real shiny,no grey,or black film left on the cable ends that connect to the battery.Alternator does not have enough power to run the ignition and all it`s assesories.
you only set base timing to 15 degrees BTDC (before top dead center).
Ignition Timing
CAUTION: Parking brake control should be applied. Depress the parking brake pedal, and warm the engine to the normal operating temperature.
Turn off all electrical loads.
Rev the engine to 2000-3000 rpm two or three times and allow the engine to return to the idle.
Turn off the engine and disconnect the throttle position sensor electrical connector. (not really necessary)
Start the engine and rev it to 2000-3000 rpm two or three times and allow the engine to return to the idle.
Check the idle speed. The idle speed should be between 700-800 rpm in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) position.
NOTE: Make sure that the timing pointer is pointing to the 15° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) mark on the crankshaft pulley. Each notch on the crankshaft pulley represents 5 degrees. Check the ignition timing with a timing light.
I have the same problem. I think it is a loose connection rather than anything else but I do not know how to open the back of the speedo. Can anybody help?
