1993 Plymouth Voyager 3.0L 2WD Automatic 186K-miles
Accelerating from a stopped position, after the van has been allowed to sit for a few hours, it will shift (to second gear?) and I can accelerate to 35-40 mph. At 40 and above it feels like it needs to shift gears but doesn't.
After a few miles/minutes of driving, and accelerating from a stopped position, it will not shift out of first. However, if I shift into N and wait 3-4 seconds, then shift to the #2 on on the column it will go into second for about 30-60 seconds.
And from time to time it will try to shift (normally?) but then slip back down to a lower gear.
I've had the van for over a year. The fluid level has never changed. I added 1/2 pint to see if it would help but it did not. The fluid is light brown but has been since I owned it. There is no telling how long that fluid has been in there. I'm sure I will change the filter, screen (?), and fluid, but the last time I had this happen with a Plymouth 2WD it did not help. I never found out the cause and let the car go away.
I have been told never to drain the fluid and replace with new, but no one can tell me why. The says to replace the fluid.
Any help/advice would be appreciated. This is my only mode of transportation.
Check the vehicle speed sensor and the throttle position sensor if one of them are bad the transmission may not know when to shift
The fluid is old and wore out it needs to be changed and since it is that bad you might want to do a tranny flush there is probably some buildup in some of the valves and since it has so many miles you might want to put some lucas tranny treatment in it to

Thanks. I am going to try this later today. It surely can't make it any worse.
I replaced the fluid, used Trans-X instead of Lucas. Still will not shift into third. Will not shift into second unless I manaully shift to nuetral then down to D or 2.
But it does run better in first and second than it did since I bought it.
