just bought my 1998 xj8 jaguar and having the same problems. Tried resetting the cars opener to no avail. have sears chamberlain security plus from 2000. can't for the life of me get this thing programmed to my car. Please help!! Thanks, L
I know when i programed my '98 XJ8L... i had to use the sender button on the actual opener mounted on the garage roof and not the hand-held remote... not sure if that helps
I know what the problem is but never tried to resolve it. I have a 1998 XJ8 and went through the same problem. After numerous attempts to program the 4 channel built in opener I researched the problem and learned that the system in the car actually changes the code after every use. It's a security feature built in to the system. I simply started keeping my remote in the car.
There must be a way to disable the automatic randomizer so it retains the code from your remote opener everytime. Check with the dealer to see if it can be disabled and you will be in business. Please post the info if you get it.

Learn Mode WARNING: A
garage door opening system that cannot stop or reverse itself after detecting an
object in its path does not meet current federal safety standards. To decrease
the risk of serious injury or death, do not use the universal transmitter with a
door opening system that lacks stop and reverse features as required by federal
standards. This includes any garage door opening system manufactured before
April 1, 1982. CAUTION: During
this procedure, the system that you are programming will be made to operate.
Make sure that people or objects are clear of the garage door or gate being
programmed.
Select a universal transmitter button to train.
NOTE: If more than one button is pressed, priority will be given to
the lowest numbered channel. Press and continuously hold the button for 20
seconds. CHANNEL X TRANSMIT will be displayed (X will be 1, 2 or 3) during this
time.
NOTE: If the channel being trained has not been previously trained,
the channel will immediately enter training mode (no 20 second delay). After
20 seconds, the display will read CHANNEL X TRAINING to indicate training has
started.
Point the original garage door opener transmitter at the overhead console.
Hold down the original transmitter's transmit button so the overhead console can
learn the original transmitter's frequency and data stream.
Training will be completed in 100 seconds or less. CHANNEL X TRAINED will be
displayed when training is complete. DID NOT TRAIN will be displayed if the
channel did not correctly train.
NOTE: Additional training may be required for rolling code equipped
devices. For additional information, refer to Rolling Code Programming in this
section. Release the channel X button. Training is complete.
Rolling Code Programming NOTE: To train a garage door opener (or other rolling code-equipped
devices) with the rolling code feature, follow these instructions after
completing the learn mode.
Locate the learn or smart button on the garage door motor head unit. Exact
location and color of the button may vary by product brand. If there is
difficulty locating the learn or smart button, refer to the device's Owner's
Literature.
Press and release the learn or smart button on the garage door motor head
unit.
NOTE: Following the previous step, there are 30 seconds in which to
proceed. Press and release the programmed universal transmitter button. Press
and release the universal transmitter button a second time to complete the
training process. (some garage door openers may require this procedure to be
done a third time to complete the training.)
Transmit Mode
Select the button for the desired channel (for example, for the garage door
you wish to open).
NOTE: If more than one button is pressed, priority will be given to
the lowest numbered channel. Press the button. CHANNEL X TRANSMIT is
displayed.
The correct signal is transmitted to the device being controlled.
Release the button.
Erase Mode
Simultaneously press and hold buttons 1 and 3 for 20 seconds.
CLEARING CHANNELS will be displayed while the channel codes are being

HOMELINKT UNIVERSAL
TRANSMITTER (IF EQUIPPED)
The HomeLinkt Universal
Transmitter, located underneath
the driver’s visor, provides a
convenient way to replace up to
three hand-held transmitters with
a single built-in device. This
feature will learn the radio
frequency codes of most current
transmitters to operate garage
doors and gates, and can also
control home or office lighting and
security systems (with the
available accessory package).

When programming your
HomeLinkt Universal
Transmitter, you will be
operating the garage door or
gate. Be sure that people and
objects are out to the way to
prevent potential harm or
damage.
Do not use the HomeLinkt
Universal Transmitter with any
garage door opener that lacks
safety stop and reverse features as
required by U.S. federal safety
standards (this includes any garage
door opener model manufactured
before April 1, 1982). A garage
door which cannot detect an
object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse, does not meet current
U.S. federal safety standards. For

Programming
1. Prepare for programming the
HomeLinkt Universal Transmitter
by erasing all three of the factory
default channels by holding down
the two outside controls until the
red light begins to flash (20-30
seconds). Release both controls.
2. Hold the end of your hand-held
transmitter against the HomeLinkt
Universal Transmitter (located on
your visor) while keeping the red
light in view.

3. Using both hands, press the
hand-held transmitter control and
the desired channel control on the
HomeLinkt Universal Transmitter.
Do not release the controls until
step 4 has been completed.
4. Hold down both controls until
the red light begins to flash slowly
and then rapidly. Rapid flashing
indicates successful programming
of the new frequency signal.
5. Follow steps 2 through 4 to
program the remaining two
channels.
If you do not successfully program
the HomeLinkt Universal

attempts, refer to Training a

Homelink Garage Door Opener Programming Procedure:
The procedure described below was successfully applied to a 2005 Jaguar S-Type.
To begin with, several attempts were made using the programming instructions contained in my Jaguar’s owner’s manual.Though the procedure described in the owner’s manual was straight-forward and understandable, I was unsuccessful in getting the vehicle’s remote to make my garage door opener function. The particular garage door openers I have are both made by Genie. Both openers utilize the “Rolling Code” feature.
To begin with, be sure to clear previous codes on your Jaguar’s garage door opener by first turning (rotating) the ignition key to the “I” position (first notch).Next, simultaneously hold button 1 (left most button) and button 3 (right most button) down until the middle button’s red light changes from continuous on to a rapid flash. This process takes approximately 20-25 seconds. What follows is a two part process. In the first part, get your Genie portable remote and hold it near (approximately 3 inches away from) your Jaguar’s garage door opener console buttons.Choose which button on your Jaguar’s remote you wish to dedicate to your Genie door opener and simultaneously press and hold your Genie opener button and your Jaguar’s opener button. The red light on your Jaguar’s center button (button #2) will light up and within 1-2 seconds will begin to flash rapidly. You have just completed part 1 of the two part process.
Part two:Now it is time to utilize the “Learn” function on your Genie garage door opener.Press the “Learn” button on your Genie garage door opener. The red LED adjacent to the “Learn” button will begin to flash. You now have 30 seconds in which to program your Jaguar’s opener button.Using the same button you just used in the “part 1” procedure, press and hold the same button for several seconds. As before, your Jaguar’s red light in the middle button will light up and within 1-2 seconds, it will flash rapidly.Release the button you are programming. Now, here is the key piece of information!Once again, press and hold that same button.Once again, the center button’s red light will flash rapidly.Release your newly programmed button. This procedure proved successful in my application. Here is what has just happened. The first time you pressed your Jaguar’s remote button tells the Genie opener that it exists and that it is a viable candidate for making your life easier (opening the damn door). The second time you press your Jaguar’s remote button confirms to the Genie’s rolling code that your Jaguar’s signal is legitimate and is to be trusted from then on.
