My 2000 Mitsubishi Galant suddenly shut down at a stop sign and both the battery and oil lights came on. When I try to turn it back on, it does turn on but will not stay on unless I repeatedly keep pressing the gas pedal. If I hold the pedal down, the car will die out. The oil and battery are fine and when I looked under the hood, some part that is connected to the accelerator felt loose when I shook it as if something was broken maybe. What could be the problem?
Sounds like a bad throttle position sensor or possibly a weak fuel pump
Have battery and alternator tested as well as belt looking at them battery and oil cant determine if good ---the oil light --and battery lite will come on when theirs failure and when idle is to low ---if battery is good will need to check throttle body /injectors fuel pump fuel delivery pressure
Check the gas pedal cable connection to the throttle body
Check fuel pump pressure and fuel filter

I would take a look at possiable damage to the PCM (powertrain control module)

If it does turn over but won't start, check for fuel and spark, if not spark then check to see if the crank sensor is cover with dirt.....

What you have is PROBABLY a bad Idle Air Control stepper motor... if the car stays running with your foot on the gas, and only dies when you let your foot OFF the gas... or if it dies when you shift (again, cause you foot is off the gas) that is definitely the problem. The stepper motors are kind of pricey (over $300) at the dealership, but you should be able to get one from an auto parts store for 150 or so. easy as heck to replace, it has three 8MM bolts into the throttle body, just unplug it, unscrew the bolts, and put the new one in... just be sure to be careful with the new o-ring... DON'T LOSE IT! :)
