I have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ and am experiencing the cluster issue as well as my headlights not coming on at times. When I pull the switch I get parking lights, but no headlights. After 15-30 minutes they usually come on, however this is getting to be a serious issue. I do not believe it is the switch as the parking lights come on with no problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
It happened to me on my 1997 Jeep Wrangler. When I pulled on the light switch, all the lights come on except for the headlights themselves (high beam arrows near the speedo came on too). I threw a couple of parts at it and that didn't solve the problem. Come to find out it was a short on the front grille of the Jeep. There's two small grounding wires that are screwed near the headlights on the front grille. Anyway, I figured the Engineer expected the front grille bolts and those two little grounding wires to take care of front light(s) grounding. Well, overtime they rust and stop doing their job. I ran a 16 awg wire from one of the grounding wires on the grille to the back firewall and my headlights came on and stayed on. Haven't had a headlight problem since.
I have a 97 TJ and the headlights wouldn't come on but the parking lights would. Funny thing was that if I pulled the brights to flash someone, the brights would work. I took out the old headlight switch ($26 at Checker) and they work again. When I pulled the switch there was one connector that seemed to be corroded. Hope this helps
Sounds like a faulty / intermittent Earth connection. Check all the battery and earth leads where they connect to the Battery, Engine, Starter Motor and Body. If possible disconnect, clean thoroughly by removing any corrosion or paint that could cause a poor connection, and reconnect making sure all are tight.
