Hi,

Offhand, the brake light warning on most dashboards would indicate that the hand/emergency brake is engaged. If even when the hand/emergency brake is disengaged or is in normal position and the light is still lit, it could indicate that:

  • the brake fluid in the reservoir is below minimum level;
  • and possibly the brake shoes/pads need replacement.
Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Just about every car, truck or SUV has a series of warning lights located on the instrument cluster of the dashboard. Among them is a brake system warning light that lights up and tells you when something is wrong with your brake system.

You wouldn’t knowingly drive a vehicle without brakes, but some drivers do almost the same thing by ignoring what the dashboard brake warning light is trying to tell them. Any brake system problem has to be regarded as a major safety issue and your car should not be driven until the problem has been resolved by a mechanic.

Could be low brake fluid due to worn front brake pads.

Dashboard brake light stays on

The warning light means the brake fluid level is low or the parking brake is on. Or one of those sensors has failed.

I have a 96 sable i change the alternater and the battery twice and when it sit for more then a day the battery dies

You have something that is staying on when it should be off such as a glove box, under hood, or trunk light. Maybe an electric antenna that keeps running. Maybe your brake lights are staying on. After eliminating the obvious, make sure everything is off and connect a test light between the positive battery post and the terminal. If the light burns, remove the fuses one at a time. When the light goes out or dims considerably, you have found the culprit.

Break light and odd noise,

For problem #1 the sable has a sensor inside the cylinder(called fluid level indicator) to activate the brake light when the fluid level is low. in the 96 Sable, mercury had a recall for these cars regarding the brake light not functioning right
On problem 2, you did not specify if the noise came from the wheel area or directly under the car.
