I have a noise in the steering when driving slow right after starting up my jeep in the morning. I took my car to service and they told me that
the steering reservoir was almost empty and found rack, pinion and high pressure line leaking. The repair will cost $1,500. My question is what could be the cause of this problem. I never checked the fluid level because I take my car for service at a dealer and they are suppose to check it when they change the oil regularly every 3000 miles . Also I just learned that the steering fluid has to be flushed every 30,000 miles and the dealer never told me to do so in 3 years I am going to the same place. The dealer told me that the parts are in backorder and will take 2 weeks to get them. In the meantime may I drive in that condition safely? Should I check the fluid every day ? Should I take my car to someplace else?
I just picked up the pressure line from AdvanceAuto for $74,since it's been "sweating" for years. The dealer wanted like $200. I had no issues, or leaks, after replacing the line. The pressure line is
the line , that comes out of the bottom of the resvoir, mounts behind the headlight,and goes to the rack. A real pain in the ****.
My vehicle, is a 02' Liberty 3.7L, by the way.
Yea, i agree with steve on this it sounds as tho they are pressing you for parts that may not even fix the problem, as i say when in doubt get a second opinion, and keep a close eye on the PS fluid resivor i would check it more often than 2 weeks starting off.
And I would suggest you do take the car somwhere else and tell them to check this as they should.
I suggest to check the fluid at least once every 2 weeks and keep a bottle of power steering fluid in the cars also just check every once in a while and then get the lines replaces hope that helps

HI check your power steering oil pump reservoir filter screen this seats at the bottom of reservoir is probably plug .it can cause the pump to aerate if thats your case replace reservoir.for proper inspection of reservoir completely empty it and check. hope this helps.

Power steer pump has a small reservoir with dipstick as part of cap. Usually black reservoir. Check with engine OFF.

I have a 2005 liberty that is leaking power steering fluid and I have to replace the fluid daily just to drive the car, I have a leak in the main pressure line of the power steering system the part costs 170 to 180 dollars and if you can change it yourself you should have no problems if not most dealships are charging 60 -90 dollares per hour to replace it some small shops may charge less if you can get ahold of the part yourself. Around here in Michigan there is a lead time of about 2 weeks just to get that part. I have one on order and am waiting for it to come in. Until then if I need to drive it I have to put fluid in it daily, dont wait until your pressure line begins to spring more leaks before finding out the problem this is what I did and I am now paying the price for it.
I also have a 2005 Liberty and have the same problem. It took over 3 weeks to get a new Power Steering Pressure line. The car only has 31,000 miles on it. Should this be happening so soon in the car's life. There are no recalls for this, but I wonder how common it is.
I have a 2006 Liberty with the same problem (35K miles). Also had a 2 week lead time to get a new line. Then the new line leaked!
