Inspect/Test/Service/Replace Removing Ball Joint Tapers from the Steering Knuckle
The ball joint is connected to the steering knuckle with a tapered connection, called a steering taper, which is also used in other steering connections.

Another way of "breaking" the taper is to use a large hammer.

  • First, remove the cotter pin from the ball joint nut and loosen the nut several turns.
  • Position the vehicle so that the coil spring is pushing on the ball joint. This could require lifting the vehicle or allowing its weight to rest on the wheels.
  • Use a hammer to pound sharply on the steering knuckle on the outside of the taper. this will deform the taper and spring pressure will separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
Removing the Ball Joint from the Control Arm
A ball joint can be retained by one of several methHow to change upper ball joint on 93 suburban 2500 - f57-20.giff57-20.gif Three common ball joint retaining methods. Courtesy of Moog Automotive, Inc. Some ball joints are held in with rivets from the factory. The rivets are drilled and punched to remove them. Bolts How to change upper ball joint on 93 suburban 2500 - f57-21.gifre used to hold the replacement joint in place.
f57-21.gif Original equipment rivets are replaced with nuts and bolts. Courtesy of Moog Automotive, Inc. The most common method is press fit. Some manufacturers require you to replace the entire control arm assembly if a ball joint is to be replaced. In these cases, the ball joint and control arm are made as a single assembly and individual parts are not available.
If the control arm has been removed from the vehicle, a pressed-fit ball joint can be removed using a standard hydraulic press. when the control arm is still on the car, a special press set allows the removal and replacement of these ball joints. some pressed-fit ball joints have a spot weld that holds them in place. this must be carefully removed. when a replacement ball joint is installed, a snap ring often takes the place of the weld.
NOTE Be sure the grease release hole in the new ball joint's rubber boot is aimed away from the brakes.

SOURCE: upper and lower ball joints

Jack the truck clear of the ground and let the wheel assembly hang. After you remove the tire place your jack under the lower control arm so it's firm. Remove the cotter pin, if you have one and loosen the big nut almost off. Wedge a "pickle fork" between the control arm and the spindle and give it a belt with a hammer until the ball joint pops. Raise the jack so you can undo the nut easily and separate the control arm and spindle.
The upper ball joint is riveted or bolted in. Grind the rivets or use a cold chisel and remove the ball joint. Clean up the area with some sandpaper, dirt , loose rust, etc.and put the new joint in. Put the spindle back on using the jack if necessary and put the nut back on and tighten.
The lower ball joint is pressed in. Tie the spindle out of the way and brace the lower control arm with some blocks or the jack if you have to. A few whacks with a hammer should pop the joint out. Clean the hole out lightly, just to remove loose rust and dirt. Put the ball joint, minus the grease fitting ,,in the hole and use the jack with a block of wood, to put it in place. You may have to fiddle with the spindle to make sure it is lined up. I've never had any trouble using a 1ton trolley jack and the weight of the truck to put the lower ball joint back in. Replace the nut and grease fitting.
The new ball joints will probably come with cotter pins, use them. Make sure the new joints are tight or they will wear the holes in the spindle. Don't forget to grease the new joints. Hope this helps.

The ball joints on both 2wd and 4wd upper are pressed in you need to remove snap ring and using a hammer pop out the old one out this is after you seperate the upper arm from the spindle. To install the new ball joint you should use a ball joint press that you can rent at most autoparts shops

93 chevy g20 have speedometer cable

The speedometer cable should not have anything to do with changing the ball joint. it goes directly to the transmission on a 93. your grinding sounds like either someone didn't get the bearing back in the hub right or loose bolts on the wheel ..

How to replace control arms on a 93 protege

Raise the front of the vehicle and support it by the frame with jack stands. Remove the front wheels using the air gun and a socket.

  • 2 Place the floor jack under the lower control arm as close to the ball joint as possible. Raise the jack until it begins to lift the control arm. Make sure that the floor jack is positioned where it cannot slip off the control arm.
  • 3 Remove the cotter pin in the upper control arm ball joint using the wire cutters. Remove the nut on the bottom of the upper ball joint using a wrench. Separate the ball joint using the ball joint separator tool. Insert the tool between the spindle and the upper control arm and hit it with a hammer until it comes loose from the spindle.
  • 4 Remove the upper control arm by removing the nuts on the engine side of the arm holding it to the frame. Use a wrench for this, but as the bolts are loosened, keep the alignment shims together that are behind each nut. It will be necessary to replace these on the side they were removed from for the alignment.
  • 5 Lift the upper control arm off and remove the upper ball joint using the ball joint installer kit. This procedure is only necessary if the new control arm does not come with a ball joint, which would be unusual.
  • 6 Place the receiver over the bottom of the ball joint and the smaller pusher cylinder on the topside. Place the large C-clamp from the kit over the cylinders. Use the ½-inch drive air gun and socket to push the ball joint out. Reverse the process to install the ball joint. Install the upper control arm in reverse order of removal.

    How do i change upper ball joint on a 93 f150 4wd?

Hello there, Most of the upper ball joints on the Fords have to be pressed out and a new one pressed in. You can save your self alot of frustration if you take off the upper control arm and take it and have someone press it such as a local automotive machine shop. you also might be suprised that buying an upper control arm assembly from your ford dealer it comes with a new ball joint installed and in most cases comes with new bushings as well, and it really isn't that much more money. and it will save you alot of aggrevation.

Good Luck and I hope this helps.

How to remove upper/ lower ball joints on 1990 GMC Suburban 4x4

hit the steering knuckle where the ball joint shaft goes through it while u have the wedge/pickle fork inserted, u do this on the round side of the knuckle, this is what is called a "Morse Taper" hitting it distorts the hole a little and that lets the joint pop free. You need at least a 5 pound ball pen for this to work..

1997 gmc yucon 4X4 ball joint removal

Okay, more than likely you are going to need to take the upper and lower arms in to have the old joints pressed out and then pressed in. If you can buy the replacement joints and take them in, you will save a WHOLE lot of cash. You could also do this yourself if you have a hydraulic press or, if you can swing by an auto parts store that rents out tools......it looks like a modified c clamp.
