Re: On my 2003 Chevy Suburban, the emergency brake won't...
There is a cable running from handle to brake assembly it is probably broke there is a release lever under there on brake about a one inch lever hold down on brake and move this and let up on pedal.

Lubricate the pivot pin, ratchet and cable end, then manually move all parts several times while holding/pulling on the release lever. They are above the left kick plate in the driver footwell area. The ratchet and locking mechanism stick because they NEVER get lubricated !
Do you have a question? or are you making a statement? Did you drive for quite a bit while leaving the e-brake engaged? if so you will probably need a new set of pads and possibly new rotors if they got too overheated.
You have limited choices. Your biggest concern will be the Racheting action of the Emergency brakes which takes up slack.
Check online for the Emergency Brake Assembly for your Model. There should be pictures and mention of the release mechanism. They are made to allow the cable spool to unspool, usually by moving a tab with a screwdriver tip.
Now on the wheel end, the mechanism may pull the brake levers to spread the Brakes. The pivot for the wheel lever may be frozen or the cable frozen in its travel zone.
So you have the possibility of devices taking up slack at both ends of the brake cable. Not familiar with Mazda design, if it has a hand lever for Parking brake. This style can be auto-rachet or mechanical nut and bolt style to increase or decrease cable length.
The more photos you see about the components, the better off you will be. I hope I have been helpful.
you should hear a click from the solenoid when you apply the brakes. If your brake lights don't work, your shift lock release won't either. There is a bypass method for emergencies in your owner manual. Check fuse for brake lights. And switch on brake pedal
make sure the emergency brake is completely releasing , is the motor lugging or working really hard to make it move? does it feel like the brake is on, or that the motor just won't get up to speed to make it move smoothly
Typically and this is how it works on my 94 chevy suburban.
Put the truck into neutral. apply the emergency brake press the brake pedal and move the 4X4 shifter into 4wd lo Than put the vehicle back in park release the emergency brake and you should good to go from there.
please let me know if you need any further assistance with your vehicle and i would be glad to help you.
I had the same problem on my 2003. Open the driver door all the way. Get on your knees just outside the door. Follow the plastic tub that holds the parking brake release cable inside the truck. Start from the release lever and follow to the end of the tube. There will be a metal lever that the cable was attached to before it broke. You have to pull that lever with your hand to release the parking brake. Very Important!!!...Hold the parking brake activation pedal with your other hand when you release the brake. Let the pedal out slowly when you pull the metal release lever. The pedal will come back very fast and you could injure yourself if you are not careful. Good luck!
On your parking brake assembly is a single wire switch. You can unplug it, but you will have to remember not to drive with it set. To replace the switch the whole assembly will have to come out. The switch is about $20 and labor should run about two hours. Good Luck
