Hi I hope someone can help with this.
The problem seems to occur only when the car is warm and the engine seems to die when accelerating. When running normally the engine sounds and feels fine and I haven't noticed a loss of power. The battery seems lively, although I don't know the age of the plugs, coil, distributor etc. Once the engine has stopped it often wont start again for a while. Bumpstarting doesn't seem to work.
Also, I recently fitted a new exhaust manifold which involved stripping and replacing the inlet manifold and head. All were replaced with new gaskets and correct torque settings - however, the car didn't have a gasket fitted between the throttle body and the inlet manifold and as such I replaced it without one. Do you think that this problem could be due to this?
It could be. The car seems to be flooding its self as though you are driving on the choke all the time. Replace the air filter if dirty and clean all the breather pipes. Also check the accelerator cable is not snagged and is adjusted correctly.

Thanks Ray,
I'll try your suggestions and fit a new gasket while I'm at it.
Im having the same issues with my 1.8 P-reg Golf. Go to acceleorate and at times the engine coughs and splutters. in the last 6months Its had a new cambelt, spark plugs and leads, new oil filter and air filter. However ive gone through 2 Coils in the last 4 years that ive had the car, and im just about to replace the battery.
