Start with checking you transmission solenoid under the hood. These do go bad often. But also have you serviced the transmission regular this is vital to know. Speed sensors in the trans need to pick up movement also in order to know what to do these are called VSS sensors Vehicle Speed Sensors in these you have input and output. These should be removed and cleaned and tested for resistance to see if it is within range. Try checking the internal fuse panel. Fuse #1 (a red 10) may burn out out and effect transmission shifting. (happend to me)

I believe that the cable has to be adjusted. Most cases, the cable adjustment is off. Worst case senario, is the bushing in tranny is worn out.

two issues here. this may be a low fluid issue. i would check the level of the fluid first. the next issue could be a blown shift solenoid. these are located inside of the transmission pan.also, check the filter as well.(transmission filter could be clogged)

the easiest way is going to first be to remove the serpentine belt which requires you to loosen the nut on the end of the idler pulley just above the alternator, then behind the pulley is a bolt with a 13mm head on it that you will want to loosen after the pulley is loose to relieve tension off the belt. Remove the belt. Next make sure you remove the battery cables to ensure you dont fry yourself to the car when unhooking the electrical connections from the alternator, your battery is located on the passenger side, down behind and underneath the headlight. Then go under the car and remove the black plastic clips that hold the splash shield up under the bumper. After this the alternator becomes as accesible as it can be, remove it from the bottom. Thanks for using fixya!!

It sounds like the trans has gone into "Limp In" mode. You may need to access the trans controller and look at fault codes. A Generic OBDII scanner may give you the codes. You could also try disconnecting the battery which will reset the trans controller. (however that is not a cure but it will verify the trans was in fault mode) The most common issues I've seen have been with the "Input" and "Output" Turbine Speed Sensors. They are both mounted on the trans case (External). The input is towards the front and the output is near the rear.

It is a cable, and there was a recall for this concern.
