Circuit Description
The PCM has the ability to monitor this process by using a rear Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S 2). The rear HO2S 2, located in the exhaust stream past the catalytic converter, produces an output signal relative to the oxygen storage capacity of the catalytic converter. The PCM then calculates the ability of the catalytic converter to convert the exhaust emissions effectively. Whenever the catalytic converter is functioning properly, the rear HO2S 2 signal will be far less active than the signal produced by the front Oxygen Sensor 1 (O2S 1).


Conditions for Setting the DTC

  • DTCs P0106, P0107, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0200, P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0404, P0405, P0508, P0507, P1404, P1441 not set.
  • Engine run time is greater than 25 seconds.
  • Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) is greater than 40 degrees C (104 degrees F).
  • Air/fuel ratio is between 14.5:1 and 14.7:1.
  • Throttle Position (TP) angle is between 5% and 50%.
  • Engine has met the above conditions for 140 seconds.
  • O2S 1 voltage is greater than 1042 mV for 50 to 75 seconds.


Action Taken When the DTC Sets

  • The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will illuminate.
  • The PCM will record operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The Freeze Frame and Failure Records buffers will store this information.
  • A history DTC is stored.


Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

  • The MIL will turn off after 3 consecutive ignition cycles in which the diagnostic runs without a fault.
  • A history DTC will clear after 40 consecutive warm up cycles without a fault.
  • A scan tool can clear the DTCs.


Diagnostic Aids
Whenever the oxygen sensor pigtail wiring, connector or terminal are damaged, the entire oxygen sensor assembly must be replaced. Do not attempt to repair the wiring, connector or terminals. In order for the sensor to function properly, the O2S must have a clean air reference. This clean air reference is obtained by way of the oxygen sensor wires. Any attempt to repair the wires, connectors or terminals could result in the obstruction of the air reference and degrade the performance of the oxygen sensor. Check for the following conditions:

  • A rich exhaust - An overly rich exhaust may load the catalytic converter causing high rear HO2S 2 signal voltages.
  • A silicone contamination - A silicone contamination of the rear HO2S 2 may cause a false rich condition. A powdery white deposit on the rear HO2S 2 will indicate this condition.
  • A faulty HO2S 2 - Whenever the rear HO2S 2 is internally shorted, the rear HO2S 2 voltage displayed on a scan tool will be over 1.0 volt. Disconnect the rear HO2S 2. Jumper the rear HO2S low circuit to the engine ground. Whenever the rear HO2S 2 voltage goes from 100 mV to around 450 mV, replace the rear HO2S 2.
  • An intermittent test - Observe the rear HO2S 2 on a scan tool while moving the related connectors and wiring harness with the key ON. Whenever the fault is induced, the rear HO2S 2 display will change. This may help isolate the location of the malfunction.
  • A damaged harness - Inspect the PCM harness for a short to voltage in the rear HO2S 2 low circuit.


Test Description
Number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the Diagnostic Table.

  1. The Powertrain OBD System Check prompts the technician to complete some basic checks and store the freeze frame and failure records data on the scan tool if applicable. This creates an electronic copy of the data taken when the malfunction occurred. The information is then stored on the scan tool for later reference.
  2. This step determines if DTC P0138 is the result of a hard failure or an intermittent condition.
  1. Disconnecting HO2S 2 and jumpering CKTs 1668 and 1669 to ground should cause the scan tool to display HO2S 2 voltage below 100 mV (0.1 V). If the signal voltage is still high, the PCM is malfunctioning.
  1. Replacement PCMs must be reprogrammed. Refer to the latest Techline information for programming procedures.

Code 138 is O2 sensor 1/2 circuit high voltage. This means the sensor after the catalytic converter on the side with cylinder one is staying in the rich range. The sensor could have failed or it could be a fuel problem in the engine.

How engine performance is affected by bad o2 sensor po138

Hey, The o2 sensor affects the fine tuning of the engine. it is used to tell how well the engine is burning off the fuel in the combustion process. if there is too much oxygen, then it will adjust the air/fuel mixture accordingly and vice versa. If the car runs too lean or to rich you will loose power and possibly damage your engine. It would be a good idea to replace if its faulty.

The code description for Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0138 is "Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 2 shorted to voltage" The oxygen sensor (O2S) voltage should always be between 0 and 1 volt. This code sets when the O2S voltage is greater than 1.2 volts for at least 30 seconds.

The code description for code P0117 is "Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT)Voltage Low". The ECT is a thermal variable resistor. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) sends a 5 volt reference to the ECT and measures how much of this voltage returns to the PCM to determine engine temperature. This code sets when the ECT voltage signal is less than 1 volt.

Here's the kicker...which came first, P0117 or P0138? Low ECT voltage can cause the engine to run extremely rich and cause the O2S voltage to go high. This needs to be looked at with a scanner that can display the actual ECT and O2S voltages so they can be compared.

I would say that with the symptoms you are describing along with these codes, there is a GOOD chance that you have some kind of wiring harness damage or water in a connector that is shorting these two circuits together. This would definitely RAISE the voltage on the O2S circuit that is supposed to be low, and LOWER the ECT voltage that is supposed to be high.

Engine light came on. i have a programer and this is the code it read out to me po138 u2 (h02s-12) ckt (h1, s2)

A code P0138 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Faulty O2 sensor
  • Short to battery voltage in O2 sensor signal circuit
  • High fuel pressure (not as likely)

Here are some potential solutions:
  • Replace O2 sensor
  • Repair short to battery voltage in o2 sensor signal circuit

it will be the o2 sensor after the cat.. check the connections. the first bank should be the right side of the engine while sitting in the car. look at that side of the exhaust.
