I have a 96 chevy 1500 4x4 it will shift into all gears just fine except overdrive i have changed the transmission fluid and checked all fuses what could it be
I have a 90 chevy 2500 2wd 350ci.when i go to start my truck the key turns hard in the ignition,the check engine light and brake light come on the heater dont work,and the transmission will shift from 1-2 at real high rpm and shift hard,no 3-od.this comes and goes,but all happens at the same time.some times it last for 10 min,sometimes its days.what is going on?

you may be confusing the torque converter clutch engagement with o.d. this trans has a problem with the T.C.C. regulator valve wearing out the valve body bore. this will cause the converter clutch to engage only sometimes or not at all. this will set a P1870 code in the control module. when this code is stored in the controller, ( check engine light may or may not be on), it increases the pressure in the transmission causing the 1-2 shift to be harsh. ask a local tranny shop to scan the vehicle ( most will do this for free) if this is the problem they can either fix your valve body (sonnax parts) or replace it with an upgraded valve body. hope this helps

Try putting some transx in it i was having some problems with my transmission put some in there got another thirty thousand out of it not sayin it will work if nothing else it may be worth a shot its only like nine dollars. I know from exsperience i would not change your transmission fluid i swear everytime i try that ity pushes it over the edge sounds crazy but its like that old dirty fluid for me was the only thing holding it together. lol

transmission shift solenoid is stuck open this is a common vehicle issue in automatics and not particular to any make or model vehicle 15 dollar part and arm and leg for labor if taken in
heres an idea to try
take out the transmission filter and replace with new one make sure to take not of any metal debry in trans pan this indicates the trans had sheered its gears down and a trans rebuild is needed
the transfilter needs to be changed at a certain milage interval they can get clogged up
there is a kit you buy for your truck at any parts store
its an easy change hour of time unbolt trans pan unbolt trans filter and put new one in
kit comes with new seals less than an hour you can do it yourself
to overdrive you would feel a difference in shift badley if it was that something to keep in mind

If it won't go into overdrive a speed sensor within the transmission may not be sending the shift signal to the transmission. Check fluid levels to make sure that's not causing the problem. Also, check that the fluid is red color and clean.
Transmission probably needs to be serviced at a reputable shop if you want this problem fixed.
