3rd gear took forever to shift rpms will rise up to 5 it started missing then started jerking the day i was driving and it just stopped going acted like it was in neutral no gears will work this all started after i had my transmission fluid changed
Your transmission is worn out Bands are burnt and probably needs a rebuild or replacement. Not much doubt about it.Sorry bud its dead. Was it a transmission flush you had? With a filter change? What made you decide it was time to have ****** fluid changed? Starting to slip a little, hesitating when starting out, was probably going out before you took it in.
its a flood car and so i had everything changed on it when i bought it. i only had it a freakin day shy of a month. im 17, and i told the mechanic that i needed my transmission fluid changed, but i dont think he did it properly, hell my cruise control quit working and horn after i left, ( the mechanic works for the small car lot) and i have noone to help me do anything and i just dont even know where to begin to find out whats wrong with my car...where do i check how much fluid is in it ? because i seriously dont think he put enough in it or even put any in it... ive only got 119 miles on it. ive been told by several ppl that have drove my car and rode with me that it seems like its electrial/computer/sensor problem. but yet again its a flood car so it does tricks unfortuanately

SOURCE: Can't shift into reverse ( manual transmission )
I have the same problem on my 2005 cts. The shifter fork has two rubber bushings that attach at the transmission that break or give way. I assume they did this for a softer feel and to avoid vibration but it leads to the selector not engaging well when you go the extreme direction of reverse on the shifter as there is too much deflection. I replaced the bushings with washers as spacers and it seems to work as a "McGyver" fix. I do intend to get the parts needed from Cadillac to restore it to factory standards. Hopefully they have the parts. To fix the problem you have to go under the car. To get good access you have to disconnect the exhaust and the driveshaft. I did it without this and just tormented my poor hands but I wasn't willing to do all the other work while in my driveway. You simply take the clip holding the fork shaft onto the transmission selector end off and slide the small shaft out. I also took off the shifter side of the fork to study the thing a bit better. That takes a 13mm and a small allen wrench, 4.5 or 3/16, can't remember. Then replace the bushings or do as I did and stack some washers so as to get rid of the slack between the inside of the fork and the gear selector on the transmission. Assemble and try. If you have as good dexterity and tenacity at your fingertips as I do, you'll curse the day you attempted doing this without taking out all the other stuff. If you don't, take out all the other stuff to make room for your hands. The space is very confined. Good luck.

First off, I'd try changing the fluid and filter in the transmission. I know a lot of cars claim "lifetime fluid" - it's BS. Believe me, even the lifetime fluids get very dirty. Change out the fluid and filter, and you could even add some Lucas stabilizer to it - that may well help cure the problems.
When the transmission goes completely, it may lock up the drive wheels, sending you into a careening slide, or it may kick out to neutral and coast to a stop. It's also possible that if it flat-out blows, it could fragment inside and you'd hear what sounds like bolts in a blender as you coast to a standstill.
Discounting the transmission blowing up, and just looking at driving in a drive gear other than overdrive, you're looking at more heat in the transmission due to the higher gear RPM, shorter fluid life, possible slippage of the bands down the road due to heat, and of course decreased gas mileage due to the engine running at higher RPM.

You don't have torque converter shudder. You don't even mention that in your original post! You def had a solenoid issue. My 94 STS did the same thing. I only had reverse, 1st and 2nd gear. Wouldn't shift outa 2nd period. It was a $200 solenoid repair. Car had a 160K on it when that happened. I have almost 170k on it now. Shifts and works fine. you don't need the tranny replaces ad josavv63 indicates.

You need to have it checked out by a mechanic as soon as possible, I drive a 2000 cadillac catera and it began to have the same problems about 4 months ago but last month my sport mode button began to blink which means a transmission problem. So when i had it looked at they said my 3rd gear was almost completely burnt out and it cost $2,000 to fix. The cause was a broken piece of the transmission was failing and it had to be completely rebuilt. Good luck!!

A few things could be wrong....it could be your brake control module, anti-lock brake system or a wheel speed sensor. The best thing to do is to get it into a garage and have them take a look at it and give you an idea of what is wrong. Either way, if you do not have the proper tools, you are better off taking it to the shop.
I hope this helps.
