I replaced the power steering pump on my friends 98 sahara ed. the 4L.. somehow the old pump exploded, when i first went to open the hood to see what she was talking about the pulley and shaft were hangin out of the housing and the bearing pretty much turned into buckshot. I pulled the pulley off, put it on the new pump and as far as my best effort, I believe is pressed in the same distance on the shaft as the original. After putting the belt back on and tensioning it, the belt now walks towards the end of the fan clutch pulley and stays there. It is about 1/4-3/8" or so further forward than it should be. What could be causing this? The harmoinc balancer seems to be in good condition still, cant find any wobbly pulleys, and all pulleys align up...or appear so... the belt looks like its in its propper track on all pulleys except fan clutch..so I'm stumped. Any suggestions? Also, with the severity of the failure in the old pump, should I have drained ALL PS fluid and replaced? I only drained resivoir and part of the line, added and bled system as best as I think I could have. Any help and advice is GREATLY appreciated.
The 4.0L inline 6, next time tell engine,
get the pump from jeep, china, or fleabay , who's pump is it?
matters, in many cases.Duracrap pumps.?
wrong methods.
cause it ,did you read the SM?
all pulleys must be in perfect alignment. (the law of belts 101)
unless a GM Corvair... LOL
below is the SM,
free, and real
see TJ, see chapter STEERING
what does it tell you,....
my guess page 7 skipped
see the word flush?
the real book, called SM, serv. man.

Although you have pressed the pulley all the way back on did you notice if there was an offset ( hub not in the center ) in which case it is on the wrong way round
when a vehicle is engineered , all the pulleys will line up
is the power steering pump on the right side of the mounting brackets as that will also put the pulley out of line
SOURCE: Serpentine belt tensioner - cant get the pulley to
Go the other direction. It takes a breaker bar to move the tension arm.
SOURCE: hello. just replaced the power
you have the wrong one their is more than one model pump ,have you fitted it to the right side of the support bracket ,i think the last one i done it bolted to the back of the support bracket ,but the differences i found was in the adjusters
SOURCE: driving home tonight and my serp belt came off. I
You are correct in that a belt does not just dfecide to de-rail itself for no reason. For diagnostic purposes, I'd put the old belt back on after also checking side play in all the pulleys.
Wipe off the P/S fluid that came out (don't wash or you will likely cause a new problem) The P/s may be leaking or when the belt came off, steering the car without the belt can sometimes push fluid out the top.
With the old belt back on start it up and watch what is going on up there. Make sure all pulleys are running true and that you don't hear any unusual noises.(don't forget to take a good look at the pulley on the crankshaft) If everything looks good, then replace the belt with a new one. If not, whatever you see that isn't right needs to be fixed before doing that. In either case, once the belt comes off I would not use it anymore.
One important thing...If you had any service work done on anything driven by the belt recently, check the alignment of that part by sighting from the side and drawing an imaginary line. If that part is either too far towards the front or rear in regards to the other pulleys it will eventually throw the belt off.
