My fiance and I just purchases this 96 Explorer for a errand vehicle for her. We found the first glitch when we pulled into the drive-way last night. She turned the key off and the headlights along with the dash lights would flicker ever 2-3 seconds and a clicking noise was heard along with it. Any solutions?
Where was the clicking noise heard ? in the instrument panel , behind the dash ? Center ,left , right side etc.... possible dimmer module problem . Looking at wiring diagrams . Does the vehicle have auto lamps , daytime running lamps etc.... Do you know what wiring diagrams are ? Free one's here http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html enter vehicle info. year , make , model , engine size . Under system click on lighting ,then under subsystem click on instrument panel lamps and or head lamps . Check the circuits , find the source of the clicking an you most likely found the problem .

The clicking noise is most likly the starter solinoid cycling in and out. This is due to low battery voltage. charge the battery, then have the battery and charging system tested. Some auto supply stores will do this for free for you in the hopes of selling parts
good luck
check all battey connections and system grounds. Check that the battery has 12v and holds properly when load tested. To check charging system, don't disconnect any battery leads...put a volt meter across the battery. when running, you should have at least 12.9v and volts should not drop. (usual reading is generally at or near 13) at idle with all accessories on voltage should be close to that as well. voltage should not exceed 14.Also make sure that drive belt is not slipping.

The headlamp switch will cause the lamps to turn off. The switch heats up and turns the headlamps off. It will cool down and work for about 10 minutes and cut out,

this problem is caused by a tiny micro switch that is attached to the door latch inside the doors, the stick and give this false warning, have replaced dozens of them, it is called the "door ajar" switch oddly enough :)
