Are you sure is was high air pressure and not vacuum? Most modern automobiles have fuel tank purge systems which will place the fuel tank under low pressure (or vacuum). If you remove the fuel cap immediately after travelling a long distance or while the engine is still running, it could be normal to hear a "hissing" sound when removing the cap as the pressure in the tank will equalize when the cap is removed.
Your 1996 Toyota Rav 4 is an OBD compatible vehicle. If there is a problem with your canister or your EVAP vent solenoid or there is pressure in the tank that is not normal, it will set a code in the onboard computer. If the check engine light is not on, there is most likely no problem. However, yopu could still check it for fault codes because not all fault codes turn the light on. If there are no codes, then don't worry about it...there is nothing you can replace to change it.

Hi
This is quite common on these vehicles. there should be no pressure. The tanks are vented through a pipe
system to the charcoal
canister. The canister is supposed to
vent to the atmosphere, and when the engine is running, engine vacuum
should draw fresh air back in through the canister to regenerate the
charcoal.
It may need replacing or could be blocked up, I am unsure of the location on this model though, I can find out if that helps
Alternatively
you could be getting back pressure through the fuel pump, it needs bleeding
through but if the problem continues then you may have either an
injector fault or fuel pump fault.

Dan

transmission slipping dragging brakes.timing off worn timing belt .bad spark plugs + wires +coil.defected valves and worn cam shaft.use scanner to check oxygen sensor. run engine 5 minutes look at scanner . should read closed loop . if read open loop replace oxygen sensor.
The wash has made water seep into the IGNITION circuit, HT Circuit and the fuel system. Normally a good air pressure cleaning is needed to spray out all moisture after a wash and if not the performance of the car will be effected thereby undermining the working of the engine.
So cehck the wirings, check the HT coils and check if the fuel contains water. If so this can come up with the pumping when the tank gets empty and produce misfiring, splutter and jerks. So a check on the fuel filter will confirm this as it will be seen, if so remove and clean tank and change the filter.
Use of high pressure air to clean out the water will solve the issue. If water is within the ignition system, then remove caps, covers and blow out.

My toyota rav 4 was J model and chassis number was : SXA11-0094909. year 1996 2000cc. This air pressure in the gas tank getting higher if I travel more further. Thanks!!
I'm not sure is pressure or vacuum, but travel more further the "hissing" more longest. if only travel in short distance do not have any sound.
May be I should try to change the charcoal canister, but can any one tell where was it installed at? any comments to me was much helpful. Appreciated... Thanks guys...
after travel about 15km away, there was gas smell in the car and this smell before I change the tank cap was more worse. after tank cap changed, this smell will start above 15km and travel further this smell more strongest, also the "hissing" sound when opening tank cap get more longer. it will follow distance I traveled.
Can any one help me on this problem please... Thanks.
