I took my car to get it smogged and it failed. I took the car to a repair shop and they said that my car is burning too much gas and it plugged up the catalytic converter and melted it completely. They said that my car never heats up and even after running a while the hoses are still cold. What could be causing this?
Where is the thermostat located on a 2000 saturn sl
It could be as simple as a bad thermostat (stuck open), that's causing the car to not warm up, which would be one reason it's burning too much gas (running cold, not reaching operating temp. which would allow the engine to run efficiently). Did the garage mention the thermostat as a possibility? Remove the thermostat to see if it's in the open position (should be closed @ room temp.) Let me know what u find.

I don't know yet if that will work. I have to wait for my next paycheck before bringing back to the shop.
