Yes, you can do it! ;) No "gotchas" that I can think of.

If your Saturn has a remote trunk latch release in the passenger compartment is it functioning correctly? I ask because if your car is equipped with one it is most likely cable actuated and if the cable doesn't retract after being pulled this could be an indication of the problem. There should be be a return spring inside the latch assembly that returns the latch, and cable to it's normal position, if the spring is weak or damaged it won't allow the latch to return to the correct position to catch and latch. The following procedure is for removing the lock cylinder, however it should assist you in accessing the latch assembly components for inspection. If you find a disconnected spring look for a stud, hook, etc. and reattach it. If you find a broken spring you will need to acquire a replacement most likely from a dealer parts department. If you have further questions post comments in this thread.

  1. For the Sedan, disconnect the negative battery cable, then remove the trunk lid center panel assembly or reflector.
  2. For the Coupe, remove the reflex panels from both sides of the trunk lid.
  3. Disconnect the lock rod from the cylinder.
  4. For the Sedan, remove the license plate, then remove the inner and outer retainers securing the lower outer panel. Pull the panel outward, disconnect the bulb sockets from the lamps and remove the panel from the vehicle.
  5. For the Coupe, remove the screws, plastic retainers and the lower panel from the trunk lid.
  6. Remove the sealing sleeve, lock cylinder retainer, reinforcement and the lock cylinder from the lower panel. To install:
  7. Install the lock cylinder to the panel, then install the reinforcement and the retainer to the cylinder. Install the sealing sleeve.
  8. Position the panel to the vehicle. For the Sedan, connect the bulb sockets.
  9. Install the lower panel and tighten the retainers. For the Coupe, be sure to follow the proper sequence as illustrated, then install the plastic retainers.
  10. Connect the lock rod to the cylinder using the retaining clip.
  11. For the Sedan, install the center panel or reflector using the retaining nuts, then connect the negative battery cable.
  12. For the Coupe, install the reflex panels. Make sure the fastener sealing feature is intact. If necessary, apply a body caulking compound to seal against water intrusion.

SOURCE: My 2003 Saturn Ion remote trunk release won't

Check to make sure the button on the trunk latch is turned from manual unlock...they made that feature so only the key will work to open the trunk that way if someone breaks in the front of your car they can't hit the trunk release and get into the trunk...may be the same thing for your remote. Hope that helps.

I have a 2004 chevy cavalier and the trunk latch won't click into place and close fully, therefore the trunk won't close fully.

yes that could be the problem. try this putt your key in to the lock and turn it to unlock it , check to see if latch is open ,while still holding the key in the unlock position close the trunk and relock it with the key while pushing down on the hood at the same time. replace the lock when you can .there is no quick fix for this unless u use a bungee cord for it .

My trunk won't open, I have tried my trunk button and the key won't work, it worked fine a few hours, but even when i try to do it manually it won't open. Also I would look in and try the...

There are 3 phases to fixing your car's trunk lid release problem.

Phase 1: First check the fuse - once you know that's OK, then proceed to phase 2 (below).
The fuse for the trunk lock is
the bcm (pwr) 15A fuse in the instrument panel fuse box (behind panel at drivers right foot)

Check that fuse, as it is the power supply for the button on the dash that sends power to the actuator in the trunk.

Phase 2: Get the trunk open (without taking it to the dealership).
If you have remote keyless entry to the trunk, you could try that - but with the actuator
dead/dying, it shouldn't work.

Here are a couple of ideas to try to enter trunk while (a) actuator isn't working, and (b) all
valet lockout features (designed to deny valets access to the trunk) are in the "Lock" position:

There is the lock cylinder, which you stated is not functioning - put the key in, and it doesn't
turn. Just to be sure, consider: lubricate key with Graphite lock-type lubricant, and retry.

The trunk has 2 valet safetys...the locking rear seats which require access to the trunk to unlock, and then there is a valet switch in the trunk that locks the button on the dash from working to keep valet parking attendants out of the trunk. That may be in the lock position.

You can try accessing the center area of the fold down rear seat and see if you can unhinge the rear seat from there. Maybe reach in with your hand, or an extension-type tool.

there may be a way to fold the hinge away from the seat back so it can be removed from the hinge and give you access to the safety latch in the trunk and open it that way (white handle in trunk).
The white-handled safety latch release is desiged to prevent accidentally trapping children, and
if you can pull it with your extending-type or grasping-type tool, the trunk will open whether or
not the actuator motor is working.

Phase 3: Replace the Problem part.

Your failed part may be either (1) Trunk Release Relay, or (2) Trunk Lock Release Switch

My Satrun ION manual doesn't cover either of these parts, and the online parts houses, e.g.
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1431624,pgname,Electrical-Switch%2B%2526%252338%253B%2BRelay,a,search.yahoo.com%2BSearch%2Bfor%2B2004%2BSATURN
fail to provide instructions. One of those times a mechanic has to t=rely on his/her native
handiness and/or experience.
To identify which of these parts is bad, locae the Trunk Release Relay (call your dealer parts
dept. for helpful tips on finding it), then operate the dashboard trunk release button with your
ear close tothe relay - if it makes a noise, the problem is the Trunk Lock Release Switch in
the trunk lid, otherwise its the relay.

Were can I get my trunk fixed, it won't latch? 96

Any repair shop (body shop or auto repair shop) should be able to handle trunk repair. You may want to look through your local yellow pages. Have you tried spraying a lubricant into the latch assembly, sometimes it help to lube it and use a screw driver to flip latch/lock to locked position and then release with key or trunk release button several times. Rust is prone to jam locks and latches. Most local auto parts stores carry these latches in stock, and it is relatively easy to change out. Let me know if you need further help.
