The car stumbles and misses at 2000-2500 rpm but takes off if the accelerator is floored. I have changed the coil pack, plugs, all sensors on the injection system fuel filter, forward O2 sensor. The engine runs great with the front O2 sensor unplugged, but gas mileage is poor. MIL send a lean mixture code.
Vacuume Leaks can cause this problems. you have to do a through check of vacuum hoses and the EGR valve. Your best bet can be to have your vehicle scanned at an autozone store and get a code. The EGR has to be closed at idle, then as the engine warms up or is accelerated, the EGR opens. That is if your car does not have an electronic EGR . The electronic EGRs do not use vacuum to operate. They are controlled by the PCM (power train control Module).
SOURCE: 98 Cavalier 2.4L engine stumbles at 2000-2500 rpm
Could be a short in the wiring for the O2 sensor. I currently have the same issue only my car finally threw a code after two days of it acting up. Code 106. Changed the MAP sensor and it now throws 108, MAP sensor high voltage circuit. Ah the joys of cold weather and broke down vehicles. But I know that you wont always get a code with a short. Let me know if you fixed the problem.

i have a 99 cavalier that misses and eventually stalls when idling and runs ok at higher rpms
2.4litre cavalier stumbles or misses driving on highway. Cruise control cuts out. Does not happen while accelerating .
After a lot of f...ing around and much head scratching, the problem was a plugged converter. I removed the front O2 sensor to reduce the back pressure and it ran fine. Cut off the convertor and the engine is curred, Runs good, no missing, no codes, runs with the O2 sensors hooked up.
Poor fuel mileage runs sluggish
misses, tachometer eratic, rpm seem to be high, and check engine flashes when accelerator is pressed
Crank & cam &
Knock sensor codes
Engine stumbles just around 2000 rpm,
Engine has 189,000 on it
