Hi, i have a ticking noise in my 2004 XC70 that I hear when the car is first turned on (engine is cold). Once the car warms up, the noise disappears. My mechanic finally thinks he diagnosed the problem and said its the exhaust gaskets that are contracting when the car sits for a while, thus creating the ticking noise when the engine is started. The noise disappears when the engine is warm b/c the gaskests have expanded and there is no longer space in between the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head. he game me a quote of $865 to fix this saying the bulk of the work is labor b/c its a particularly difficult part of the engine to reach so he has to use mirrors and such to get in there. Anyone heard of this?

The ticking noise when cold is an exhaust leak.If it is the exhaust manifold gaskets,depending on the vehicle they can be very difficult to replace.in some cases you must remove many other parts even to see the manifolds.make sure when manifolds are off that they are checked for warpage,this is a simple test needing only a straight edge and feeler gague.ask your tech if he can see any broken manifold studs/bolts and if quote covers time for removing broken manifold studs/bolts,because if any are broken,this can take quite some time to extract the broken studs/bolts.
