I have the exact same problem! A few weeks ago, a hose attached to my radiator blew and my dad fixed it for me. Now my car keeps on overheating. I took it to autozone yesterday and they told me that I needed a Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor and an Oxygen Sensor. Does anyone know where these go??? My car is a 2000 and has a 2 liter engine. Please help!

Located on lower right side (Driver Side) of RADIATOR. It screws into the radiator. Next to lower radiator hose. Wire coming from it plugs into FAN SWITCH. Sits behind driver side FOG light.

While looking at the engine from the front, locate the transmission, come up the side of the engine and you will see a plug that is connected to a hose. that is were the temp sensor is located. remove connector and take a flat head screw driver and a pair of pliers and back out the c clip. pull the senor out and make sure you reach down in side and removed the old o ring. toss them to the side. the top of the sensor is either black or if it has been replaced before it will be green. take some of the coolant and rub it on the new o ring before installing the new one. install the new sensor, while pushing down on the sensor reinstall the c clip start the car and let it get to operating temp. shut the car down, reopen the hood and SLOWLY release the pressure in the coolant system to bleed any air in the system. and POW your done. total time of repair..about 15 minutes at the most.

SOURCE: How do I change the temperature sensor under the

It’s located on the driver’s side of the engine on top /side of the head.. midway.. I don’t think you need to remove the engine cover to see it.. if it is the correct one it will have a dark green top.. the bad version has a black top… but they can all go out to lunch on you if old enough.

To replace.. make sure the car is cool..
You need a hood tool.. or small pair of pliers to remove the retaining clip that holds it in place.
Place a rag under and around it to catch the coolant.. you will lose less than a half a cup.. if that.

Pull the retaining clip back toward you.. try not to drop it.. (another good reason for the rag)

Wiggle the sensor.. pop it out.. and replace with the new green top one make sure you clean the area well.. and when you reinstall the new one that the c clip goes back on straight or it will leak.

Once you see the part out of the box.. you will understand how it works

Start the car.. check for leaks.. run until warm with the heater on.. top up the coolant overflow bottle with distilled water.. (if more than a half a cup.. you should mix the proper anti freeze and distilled water and then top up with that)

Good luck

The radiator fan on my 2003 VW Jetta GLS won't turn off for a long time after the key is turned off, even if the car engine is cold. Is the sensor switch a possible cause? If yes where is it located

Coolant temperature sensor. Located on drivers side of the cylinder head, facing the fire wall, can be a little hard to see. Follow the upper rad hose to the plastic housing, the temp sensor is on the back of this housing. It should be green, if it is black it is definitely the problem. Not to hard to change, just hard to get your hands back there, take off the air cleaner hose to get easier access

Code 1 senser P0118 on a 2004 V.W beetle dicesel

P0118 for Volkswagen - (ECT) Engine Colant Temperature Circuit High

Symptoms:- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

Possible causes:
(Inspect the following... Repair/Replace if necessary)
- Low engine coolant level
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness is open or shorted
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical circuit poor connection
- Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
- Faulty engine coolant thermostat

P0118 VOLKSWAGEN Description: The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is used to detect the engine coolant temperature. The sensor modifies a voltage signal from the Engine Control Module (ECM). The modified signal returns to the (ECM) as the engine coolant temperature input. The sensor uses a thermistor which is sensitive to the change in temperature. The electrical resistance of the thermistor decreases as temperature increases.
When is the code detected?:When an excessively high voltage from the sensor is sent to ECM.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you need further assistance.

Where is the tempurture cooling sensor located on a 1994 buick regal

The coolant temperature sensor is a thermistor mounted in the engine coolant stream. A thermistor is an electrical device that varies its resistance in relation to changes in temperature.

For 2.5L engines, the coolant temperature sensor is located on the left side of the cylinder head.

For MFI engines, the coolant temperature sensor is located on the intake manifold water jacket or near (or on) the thermostat housing.

Faulty Coolant Temperature Sensor...how do I replace?

the ect sensor is on the right side of the front of the engine compartment. Need to pull both engine cover off to change. the part is about $15.00. Locate sensor. Pull the plastic clip holding the sensor and pull sensor straight out. Install new one (should be green color with 4 blades) and slip clip back in to hold sensor. job takes about 10 min or so.

Where is the temperature sending unit on a 1999 VW Passat located.

VW Passat & Audi A4 1990-2000

Motronic System
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is mounted in the water outlet on the back side of the head. If you vehicle still has a original VW part it will be black in color with a four terminal connector. This device signals the engine management system with the current coolant temperature, the ECU takes this information and uses it to control other such circuits as the idle speed, knock control system, oxygen sensor circuit, exhaust gas recalculation, and fuel tank venting. It is also important to note that if at any time ECU does not receive a signal from the ECT it will substitute a value of 176°F (80°C).

VR6
The Engine Coolant Temperature sensor is mounted in the thermostat housing. The body of the sensor will be blue and the sensor will be blue and have two terminals if it is an original factory VW part.

The engine coolant temperature gauge uses a heat sensitive sending unit to transmit an electrical signal to the gauge. The sending unit is a heat sensitive variable resistor that is located on or near to the cylinder head and threads into an engine coolant passage. The sensors are a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) type. As the temperature increases, the electrical resistance of the sensor decreases. As the coolant temperature changes, so does the resistance of the sensor. The gauge is calibrated within the operating range of the sensor and interprets the resistance value to display the coolant temperature. On models produced prior to 1994, the engine coolant gauge temperature sensor is a single wire terminal sensor.

Beginning with model year 1994, the engine coolant gauge and the Engine Control Module (ECM) temperature sensors were combined into one sensor with 4 terminals. The basic operation remains the same in that their resistance decreases as the coolant temperature increases, however the actual resistance values of the 2 sensor circuits are different. The electrical connector of the 4-wire terminal sensor (1 and 2) is keyed to prevent improper connection of the sensor's electrical circuit.

WARNING When trouble shooting electrical components, always consult a wiring diagram for the particular year, make and model to ensure proper test equipment connection and diagnosis. Failure to use suitable test equipment and testing methods could permanently damage the electrical component(s).
