My 2001 Durango shows code P0551 Power steering sensor. The truck runs and handles fine, showing no sign of fluid loss or pump noise. Where is the sensor located so I can check the connection, and possibly replace the sensor?
Hello. I assume you have a 4.7 liter engine. Here is a picture of its location:
The sensor is number 2 on the chart. My husband is a mechanic and I can not even get him to work on my truck lol! I had to figure this out myself. I replaced the upper power steering pressure hose on my 01 Durango bc of check engine codes P0171 and P0551 showing when scanned. I have been trying to get it inspected and this is the hold up. Drives fine and all fluids are good. Regular maintenance has been done. My pressure hose was leaking and spraying everything up under the hood. The guys at the shop replaced hose but did not clean pressure sensor, sooooo the engine light came back on before 30 miles. Now I have duumped carb and injector cleaner in my gas and also added octane boost to help blow out any sludge and build up. I also took rubbing alcohol and cleaned both male and female adapter ends to pressure switch due to ps fluid having leaked into the plastic plug of the sensor from when the pressure hose had hole in it. I am hoping by claning contacts on pressure switch and by replacing the upper ps pressure hose and also checking my gas cap that this **** light will now stay off. As I type this I have my pressure sensor wire disconnnected and hanging down so any ps fluid can drain out and I will clean it again. I have also cleane the part that connects to the ps sensor itself (black plastic part sticking out of the part that looks like a silver lugnut) I have also unhooked the hot wire on the battery but left the ground on. Gonna let it sit foar a while and then go clean the wiring end of theps sensor and plug it all back up and drive to see if it clears the codes. I will let you know how it goes, but I think this is going to fix my issue and may help you to fix your if you haven't allready! Thanks and DODGE DURANGOS ****!!! I will never ever own another after reading all the complaints and recalls on Dodge Durangos and Dakotas. i have 4 kids and I be damned if this truck is going to casue my kids harm. I plan to raise hell with the dealer that sold me the truck with the check eng light on in the first place!
