2002 Dodge Caravan ignition is locked and cannto turn key to start the car. No steering column lock.

There is no steering column lock. Have tried moving the steering wheel in both directions as well as pulling up on the shifter to try an make sure in park. Door locks, lights ect work so battery doesnot appear to be issue. Tried rocking the car forward / backward to see if the ignition lock would release but it did not.

SOURCE: key will not turn

This is a known defect with Dodge. I called my dealer and he said to gently tap the end of the key with a small hammer. I thought he was full of it until I tried it. This solution has worked for about a year and a half. Was quite the joke in my office and with my friends. One VERY cold day a few weeks back, this trick stopped working. I ended up taking off the steering wheel plastic cowl. I grabbed some wd-40 and sprayed the mechanism inside and out really good. I also had to finagle with the little pins that grab at the key cylinder. They seemed to be gummed up or jammed... Haven't had the problem since...One note, make sure the key does not stick in the start position or your starter will keep turning.

SOURCE: key doesn't turn in ignition

Give the lock a few puffs of graphite dust (available at any hardware store or craft supply store). Stroke the key in and out of the lock (this is called raking the pins), and then turn the lock. Should be better than new.
If, however, this doesn't fix it, you may have to replace the lock.
I'm betting on the graphite.
Best regards, --W/D--

SOURCE: I can't seem to unlock

Try jacking up the front wheels off the ground & then turn steering wheel back & forth while turning ignition key.

Does the vehicle start an run ?Can you turn the key to the off position ? And the key won't come out ? Did you try some key graphite ( lube ) ? New lock cylinder need maybe . Or is it a problem with
Steering Column Electric Park Lock
If the vehicle is equipped with a floor-mounted console gear shifter, an added safety feature is an steering column electric park lock system in the steering column. The steering column electric park lock system prevents the steering wheel from being locked when the transmission is in gear and the vehicle may be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of a steering column electric park lock and a park position switch, that is located in the A/T shift lock control switch. The steering column electric park lock contains a spring-loaded pin that mechanically prevents the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the Lock position when the transmission is not in the Park position. If vehicle power is lost or the transmission is not in the Park position, the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the Lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.

Sounds like that key has worn out or it's bend a little and not making any contact with the tumbler.

How to remove my key lock 2000dodge caravan

Ignition Lock Cylinder - Removal & Installation CAUTION The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before working around the air bag or SIR wiring. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary SIR system repairs and/or personal injury.
  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable from the battery.
  2. In order to disarm the air bag system, allow the SIR system capacitor to discharge for at least 2 minutes, before performing any removal procedures.
  3. Remove the screws that secure the parking brake release handle to the instrument panel.
  4. Remove the screws that secure the bottom of the lower steering column cover to the instrument panel.
  5. Disengage the retaining clip that holds the right side of the lower steering column cover to the instrument panel.
  6. Remove the lower steering column cover from the vehicle.
  7. Remove the mounting screws that hold the upper and lower steering column shrouds and remove the lower steering column shroud.
  8. Install the ignition key and turn the key cylinder to the RUN position. This is important because it will not only aid in removal of the ignition lock, but will also place the socket (in the lock cylinder housing) in proper alignment for the installation of the replacement ignition lock.
  9. Press in the lock cylinder retaining tab and remove the key cylinder (ignition lock).

Fig. Depress the retaining tab to remove the key cylinder
To install:
  1. Install the ignition key into the replacement ignition lock key cylinder. Turn the key to the RUN position. Depress the ignition lock key cylinder retaining tab.
  2. Align the shaft at the end of the ignition lock cylinder with the socket in the end of the ignition lock cylinder housing.
  3. Align the ignition lock cylinder with the grooves in the lock cylinder housing. Push the ignition lock cylinder into the housing until the retaining tab sticks through the opening in the lock cylinder housing.
  4. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position and remove the key.
  5. Install the lower steering column shroud and install the mounting screws.
  6. Place the lower steering column cover into correct position on the lower instrument panel and engage the clip that secures the right side of the cover to the instrument panel.
  7. Install the lower steering column mounting screws.
  8. Install the mounting screws that hold the parking brake release handle to the instrument panel.
  9. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Hope helps (remember rated and comment this).

Ignition Switch replace

It is something you can do yourself (for alot less money)
I am assuming you are removing just the Lock Cylinder and not the entire Ignition switch?
For JUST the Lock Cylinder:
1. Disconnect the negative side of the battery.
2. Remove the lower steering column cover under the steering column. It has three (3) screws.
3. Insert the Key and turn to the RUN position.
4. Using a small screw driver - depress the Lock Retaining Tab. It is located right of center on the column in the area of the Key insertion area.
5. Remove the Lock Cylinder.
To Install:
1. Insert the Lock Cylinder in the "Lock" Position.
2. While pushing in - insert the Key and turn it clockwise to the Run Position.
Let me know if this helped. If it is the entire Ignition Switch, let me know with an email to this post. I will send the additional infomation (for free).
