I know the timing doesn't have to be set normally with this engine, it was done at the factory. I resently replaced the distributor and the timing now is way off. I tried putting the #1 cilinder at top dead center, but to get the roder to face #1 I have to ****** the distributor all the way, than it won't even start. The only way I know to fix it is to turn the distributor clock wise a little at a time, that might do it. Is there a better more accurate way? Thank You very much for your time
#1 cylinder is at top dead center twice during a normal combustion cycle - once at the top of the compression stroke and once at the top of the exhaust stroke. To make sure you're coming up on the compression stroke, remove the #1 spark plug and hold your finger over the hole as you rotate the crankshaft. If you feel pressure, it's the right stroke. If you don't, continue for another complete revolution of the crankshaft.
Once you'e at TDC on the compression stroke, then insert your distributor with the rotor pointing at the #1 position (you may need to adjust the distributor drive shaft - lift it to disengage from the cam gear - to get the rotor pointing as close as possible to #1).

Still sounds like it jumped time. I was taught to time without a light. Advance the timing while running until it sounds its best and then back down maybe a quarter turn. Drive to see how the power is. If its better, its a temp. fix to belt replacement. Just to be safe check the compression on the cylinders first. Make sure you didn't bend a valve. Good luck.

#6 on a V8 is BDC on exhaust stroke.
Don't forget your working on a 4 cycle engine.

Did you turn the timing belt or the drive belt, because it sounds as if the timing belt broke. have this checked. if the belt broke the piston may have slapped the valves, this would have bent them. expensive repair

Look at this and see if this is how you did it. If that's not your engine you can enter your info to see it.

Take the number one plug out and put a screw driver in the hole and trun it over by hand till the piston hits the screw driver and then take the screw driver out and trun it just a lil more. Then when you put the distributor in make sure there Is a rotor on it and face the ponit of the rotor to the number one piston and bolte it in and you may have to turn it lift and right to get it right one time. Hope that helps.
