1998 jimmy SLE....when i turn the ignition key nothing happens, no engine check light or cluster lights. if i turn the key to the on position and step on the brake, it won't shift out of park, but it makes a electronic, knocking noise from either under the dashboard, or inside the steering column. is there any way to get it out of park so we can push the truck out of its parking spot without having to drag it spot.

Your vehicle has a safety system that won't let you take it out of park unless you have the brake pedal pressed ! Your brake switch could be shorted inside causing fuse to blow !
Shift Interlock System
A brake/shifter interlock mechanism prevents shifting the transmission out of the PARK position unless the brake pedal (2455) is applied. The system consists of the following components:
an actuator activated by the key interlock assembly and brake pedal pressed input.
necessary wiring.
The system operates as follows:
The actuator is energized when the ignition switch is turned to RUN, locking the transmission range selector lever in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is applied and the stoplight switch (13480) is activated, the shift lock actuator is deactivated.
The transmission range selector lever can be moved out of the PARK position.
The ignition/shifter interlock cable (3F719) locks the transmission range selector lever in the PARK position when the ignition switch is in the LOCK position. It also requires the selector lever to be in the PARK position to turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
Park is release by a small solenoid, the solenoid is powered up by the brake light circuit, so if the brake lights don't work due to a bad switch or wiring issue at the switch park will no release. If the brake lights do work then the wiring to the solenoid may be defective or the solenoid is sticking. Every car I have ever worked on has a bypass for the park lock, check your owner's manual for information on bypassing the lock out when this type of problem occurs.
There should be a cable that goes from the key lock to the shifter. That cable may be broken. There should also be a lock solenoid that requires you to push on the brake pedal to get the shifter out of park. You would need to disassemble the console to get access to the shifter and then inspect these components.
possibly the neutral safety switch connected to the brake pedal is bad. when you apply foot to brake , shouls hear a click with key in run position, this would be the safety solenoid retracting itself from shift linkage, allowing shift lever to move. try pumping rapidly, but easily the brake pedal to see if you can hear click, and or shift from park.
Your shift lock actuator is not working. This system works off of the brake light circuits. The FIRST thing to check is your brake lamps. If they are not working, that is the reason for your shifter not working. Fix the brake lamps and your shifter will shift. (Possible defective brake lamp switch).
If your brake lamps are working, then the shift lock solenoid or its circuits are defective. In this case, you can work around the problem until you can get it fixed. Turn the ignition switch one click.(Far enough to unlock the steering wheel, but not far enough to make the lights on the instrument cluster illuminate.) The shifter will then shift out of PARK. Place the shifter in NEUTRAL and start the engine. You can then shift to the desired gear to get where you need to go. If you place the shifter back in PARK, you will have to shut the ignition off and repeat the process.
turn engine off. Turn key to OFF position, (no lights on dash lit). Step on brake, pull shift lever to neutral. start car, put in drive and go. this is emergency bypass.
When the key is ON, the shift lock soneoid is engaged and won't release till the brake is applied. Since you don't have brake lights, it means the solenoid won't unlock.
check for a blown fuse or a bad brake switch on the brake pedal.
OFF is the first click clockwise from LOCK. it goes, LOCK, OFF, ON, START.
Do the dash lights come on with key on?Try starting it in neutral.Turn key on,and foot on brake, and shift the gear shift into drive, and back into park, kind of hard,Now try to start it.Let me know right what happens,we will go from there.
Sounds like the park/brake shift interlock switch is bad.
Or
"An actuator solenoid and module assembly, located on the lower portion
of the steering column, locks the shifter in Park whenever it receives
a signal that the ignition switch is in the ON position. When the
module receives a signal from the Brake On-Off (BOO) switch that
indicates the brake pedal is depressed, it unlocks the shifter so that
it can be shifted out of Park."
It says the most common failures in the system are the fuse and the BOO
switch, and if they are fine, special tools are needed to diagnose.
To disable the system: Apply the parking brake, turn the ignition key
to LOCK, then remove the key. Insert the key and turn it to OFF. Press
the brake pedal. Shift to neutral, start the vehicle and select the
desired gear.
