If it comes back, yes you will need. without pre o2 sensor your car wont idle, it will use lots of fuel and you will face drivability problems if it is post o2 sensor, it is there to check if catalytic converter is ok or not(it won caue drivability problems but may consume little more fuel to run rich and to save catalytic converter). if sensor is broken you need to replace it. if you have error for post o2 sensor but it is ok, this means your catalytic converter is going bad.

I have a 1998 Nissan Maxima SE with 292,000 miles. the service engine soon light came on. What do I look for?

I would look for a human holding a diagnostic analyzer to hook up to the car's interface to get the error
codes which point to the bad component or system. These people can be found at repair shops and dealer service departments.

P0171B

It means that your engine is running lean - not getting enough fuel for the amount of air that the engine is receiving. Because your maxima is equipped with a V-6 engine, whatever the problem, it is affecting only bank #1. Bank #1 is always the side of the engine where cylinder #1 is located, or in your case, the left side of the engine as it is viewed while facing the crankshaft end of the engine.
(on a 4 cylinder engine, there is only one bank and it is always referred to as Bank #1)
There are several things that can cause a lean condition including vacuum leaks, a malfunctioning Evaporative Emissions system, a misfiring cylinder (due to bad plugs, bad injectors, or an intake or head gasket leak.), a malfunctioning Mass Airflow sensor (MAF) or Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor (MAP) or even a bad Oxygen sensor (O2s) (Nissan sometimes calls an O2s an "Air-Fuel Ratio Sensor") It is even possible for a leaking vacuum brake booster to cause a lean code.
If there are any other malfunction codes present, it may help to pinpiont the cause of the lean code. (Like a P0301 "cylinder#1 misfire detected", in which case, you would address the misfire code first.)
Certain problems, like a leaking brake booster or a bad MAF will usually set lean codes for BOTH banks.
If the P0171 is the ONLY code present, the most likely cause is a bad O2s, but I recommend some diagnostic testing to prove it before spending the mega-bucks that Nissan gets for their O2 sensors.

2001 Nissan Maxima service engine light stays on code from Auto Zone scanner is PO139 and PO138. What should my next step be to solve this problem.

code p 0138 refers to 2 items
1--heated oxygen sensor(HO2S) 2 bank 1--high voltage ==causes --wiring short to positive --HO2S---ECM
2--oxygen sensor (O2S) 2 bank 1--high voltage ===causes wiring short to positive ---ECM
code p 0139 refers to 2 items
1--- heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) 2 bank 1--slow response ===causes --heating inoperative --wiring--ECM
2--oxygen sensor (o2S) 2 bank 1 slow response ===causes --wiring --- O2S

heated oxygen sensors9HO2S) are in the exhaust manifold before the cat converter
Oxygen sensors (O2S) are after the cat converter
it is indicated that the HO2S is faulty-
check the wiring and /or replace both sensors

Nissan Maxima 1996 issues-sensors

Dear Gandhi
1) You better check the 'Idle control relay' - and pray this is not your computer - who may be shorted ( The Computer that govern all elec. functions in the car - is also getting signals from your Mothor Mounts' to ensure a more balanced ride' If one or more of the Motor Mounts ( There are 3 ) are defective - they send a signal to the computer - and the yellow light ( Check engine soon) - will appear'
2) A Computer can only be fixed by a Nissan dealer ( est. $750 ) 3) The Idle control valve - can be adjusted too ( Again - by a Nissan Dealer only .
4) It is NOT an easy problem nor cheap . In short - your best bet is with the dealer - and ask them for a diagnostic ONLY ( est. $100 ) Don't tell the dealer what YOU think or did .......just tell them the 'Yellow light comes on' .......they'll take it from there.
Sorry I don't have better news today .

Best of luck
David

Location of a o2 sensor 2001 nissan maxima

bank 1 refers to the side of the engine that #1 cylinder is on , and sensor 2 refers to downstream , after the catalytic converter. , this link shows bank 1 on a 2001 nissan maxima V6 being on the firewall side . if you had a 4 cylinder it would be downstream after the catalytic converter .
